Portable Apps are apps that have been set up with a launcher that copies the settings of the app to the thumb drive, so that the app can run off the thumb drive whilst keeping all of your settings from PC to PC.
(could a mod clarify this, or at least tidy it up?)
But there’s no sense crying over every mistake,
You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.
portableapp is well........... portable
non-portable is well........... non-portable
First, read this:

Here's my opinion.
There are three main areas that I see where Portable Apps are better.
1. They are free and Open Source, and developed by people who are excellent programmers.
2. Carrying your programs and files with you everywhere:
Many people use public or school computers, or friends computers.
Portable Apps are installed on your USB flash drive or other portable drive, and you can use them on any other Windows computer by just plugging in the drive and running the applications.
3. A better way of installing on your own computer:
The traditional, non-portable installation method makes a lot of changes on your computer - it creates a folder with the program files, and usually puts files into the Windows system folders and changes the Windows registry.
I don't like that! I've had enough computer that crashed in my life, and for those types of applications, you need to find the installation discs, registration keys, etc, and often you lose your settings, shortcuts, passwords, and all that.
If instead you use Portable Apps, all you need to do to protect yourself is to initially install all your Portable Apps to a single folder, and then back that folder up periodically.
Installing portable apps to a USB drive is easy: just install the PA menu into the root drive, and use the "Install a new App" to add the apps.
On my hard drive, I decided not to install into the root, but instead created a folder called "PortableAppsSuite" where I installed the PA menu. The "Install a new App" automatically puts the apps in the right subfolders.
After that, I just need to back up C:\PortableAppsSuite and all its subfolders!

but the biggest thing I like is the smallness of the apps themselves. You have small applications (typically) that do the same job, just as well, as a bloated proprietary product does. Example, my Infrarecorder Portable weighs in at just under 7 m.b. installed, while Nero installed weighs in at 86 m.b. This may not apply to all of the apps here, but I think it applies to most of them. As it has been mentioned here before size matters when trying to fit an app onto a flash drive.
The smaller, the better.
Bad example. InfraRecorder when upxed is smaller than PA.com InfraRecorder.
Here's a better one:
Spread32 - 352 KB
OpenOffice - ...some more
GIMP and Pidgin might me another examples.
Freeware apps are usually simpler=smaller than commercial ones and PA.com has nothing to do with it.

My bad. I thought the one from here was smaller.
If you have a home network, or if you have a leetle bit of space on a drive at work and they tolerate this kind of thing...
Portable Apps work well when run directly from network drives and shares!
At work, I have a share where I keep a suite of portable apps, so if I need to use another computer on the network, I always have access to a great set of tools!

It's OK as long as you run only 1 copy at the time.
I've been using this too.

I currently use some of my PortableApps from my shared drive at work. This way I don't need admin rights, and carries my settings from a workstation to another.
