mail isn't being deleted off the server though button to keep isn't checked

i thought that by default, if the button to keep mail on the server was not checked, then mail would be deleted off the server as it's downloaded into TP. guess not - but now, the mail on the server is taking up too much room and i need TP to download and delete. does anyone have a solution or know the setting i need to have to do this? thanks.
