I've just posted a pre-release of GIMP Portable 2.6.0 for testing. As this is a pretty major GIMP update, we're doing a test rather than rushing out a release.
Download GIMP Portable 2.6.0 Pre-Release 2 [16MB download / 16-42MB installed]
MD5: 6fee106fb8de0f1585c504836fec1434
The GIMP Portable Background Window needed updating for this release as well:
Download GIMP Portable Background Window 2.1.3 Pre-Release 1 [0.2MB download/installed]
MD5: 17cca85b2dfd37e4079ec8de5f0ed0a2
The Photoshop Layout should work as is but please test it.
Please test loading and saving of all supported formats as well as plugins.
Thanks,
John
Pre-Release 2 (October 8, 2008): Fixed errors in GEGL plugin, removed 2 unUPXable temp files from App\gimp\bin
Thanks for the quick release.

Thanks John. Testing now...
EDIT: So far so good. Mostly just played with opening and saving different files.
While this doesn't yet have adjustment layers, it should be a big positive step in the interface.
I'll DL it now and start playing...

Wow - quick update. Thanks. I'll download it tonight at home and try it out tomorrow when waiting for work to do at the office (yes, I have to work Saturdays).
No problems with GIMP pre-release 1 so far in vista ultimate sp1, and it leaves nothing obvious behind
I tried the photoshop layout add on and it works without any obvious problems.
The background window plugin does load and close with GIMP portable, but the different gimp windows don't seem to be contained within it. Since I don't use the plugin normally I don't recall if that's how it's supposed to work or not but I thought I would mention it regardless.

Thanks for testing this, John, although I was under the impression the new GIMP had a setting to have the toolboxes inside the image window. This might make the background window application obsolete. I haven't checked out the new Gimp yet but it was listed as one of the mayor updates to the GUI.
[Edit] Humpf, the promised single window feature is still not here.. I keep losing the app's boxes all the time under other windows)
Did you upgrade an existing copy of GIMP Portable with the background window? If so, it's probably still set to 2.4 instead of 2.6. I'll have the GIMP installer update this in the final release.
And no, there is no single window support within GIMP still.

I installed Gimp Portable without using the background window addon that you have as separate download. The comment about the windows getting 'lost' refers to GIMP itself. Apparently the developers have added some feature where the Toolbox windows always stay above the image windows but apparently it only works on GNOME (and they added by no fault of GIMP). So I hope this clears this up
It's nothing to do with our stuff.

Yep
Can you please write down under it what does it do?
It's an optional part of every GIMP Portable release.

Of COURSE I go straight for the new unstable functions
I haven't seen any other problem (so far) but it crashes every time I use Tools>GEGL Operation, choose an operation and click OK.

Please check a local install to be sure those functions even work right on your PC.

according to a certain website, GEGL is still unfinished. The site does not give you more information than what I'm telling you right now, but at least you are not the only one with problems.

I think I've got the GEGL issue fixed in PR2, please try it.

Works well !
.... and cool: now (??) import of pdf is possible !
I fixed the issue with the GEGL plugin and removed a couple App Compactor leave-behinds.

Now that I can see the GEGL operations at work, I can easily imagine that they will be able to use these to create adjustment layers, long a criticism of GIMP.
It's understandable to expect a few issues from such a major version update. GIMP is already onto 2.6.1, so us beta testers should check the bug-fix list for 2.6.0 - 2.6.1 (HERE) to help dinstinguish between GIMP issues and PA issues.

i think you may need to reinstall the background window addon when upgrading as it didn't work properly just then, will post to confirm.
EDIT: Confirmed - It may just be my pc but when i reinstalled the addon all was good again. If anyone else can repeat this and confirm please let John know so he can note the need to reinstall the plugin in the release notes.
Cheers
