Thunderbird hangs

I run portable Thunderbird from an iPodShuffle on OSX. The application hangs everytime the computer wakes up from sleep, regardless on which Mac I try it on. Is there a way around this?

thanks in advance

No OSX

PortableApps.com doesn't make a version of PTB available for OSX yet.

Hibernation does play havoc with the Windows version from here, though, as Windows oddly decides to disconnect all external drives.

That's by design.

The OS unmounting all external drives before hibernating is a good thing. Unmounting the device ensures that you can safely remove a USB key after hibernation and use it on another computer without fear of corrupting the file system (many people, like me, use hibernation as a faster alternative to shutdown). If the device is plugged in at the time the system comes out of hibernation, Windows remounts it such that most applications don't know the difference.

Also, John, you appear to be confusing hibernation with sleep (ods said he had problems with sleep, and you mentioned hibernation). The former saves all RAM to disk and completely shuts off the power to the system. Electrically, it's equivalent to a full shutdown. The latter only puts the system into a low-power state, in which many devices are turned off--by design--to save power, but the processor and RAM still receive enough power to maintain the state of the system.

I know

I mentioned hibernation as I know Windows unmounts on hibernate (which makes sense logically, but can be annoying if unexpected). I wasn't sure if it did on sleep or not. (It may, I haven't tested it.) I should have been more clear about that.
