Firefox crashes on startup

For the first time after using Firefox Portable 3 since it came out, Firefox froze up and crashed now and when I try to start it up, I get the Mozilla Crash Reporter telling me that Firefox has crashed, When I press 'Restart Firefox' it starts another Mozilla Crash Reporter instance and Firefox never loads.

I am unable to fix this issue by overwriting Firefox with a new Firefox. I don't want to loose my profile, settings, bookmarks, extensions, history, cookies, passwords..

Please help!

And yes.. I did search and haven't found a resolution.

How-to

Its a little tricky but it does work:

  • First make sure FirefoxPortable is closed.
  • Second, make a backup of you whole FirefoxPortable folder (to your Desktop or so). So in case something goes wrong, you can start anew.
  • Now you rename your /Data folder to /Data-old and start FirefoxPortable. It will create a new /Data folder.
  • Close Firefox Portable
  • Now we will copy your most needed files over from the old Data-folder to the new one. All files are in "?:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data-old\profile" and go into "?:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\Data\profile".
The files you need to copy over are:
    • cookies.sqlite (your cookies)
    • signons3.txt (your passwords)
    • downloads.sqlite (your Download history)
    • key3.db (Key database for your saved passwords)
    • places.sqlite (Bookmarks and browsing history)
  • Start Firefox Portable and see if all your stuff is there

If you need them, you can also copy formhistory.sqlite (your saved form data), cert8.db (your security certificates), permissions.sqlite (permission database) but if you don't have any important info saved there, its not necessary.

For a full overview of the files in your profile folder, visit Mozillazine.

I hope that resolved your issue.

Thanks for the information

Thanks for the information simeon.

It's rather odd, but I've rebooted my machine and all was well.
