New In This Release

This new release updates Notepad++ to 5.1 (release notes) and has an improved launcher that handles Notepad++ crash data. The portable release is still using the ANSI version rather than the Unicode version as most Notepad++ plugins, including many of the default plugins included with Notepad++, are not yet compatible with the Unicode version. Users can manually add the Unicode version if desired. We will be switching to the Unicode version in a later release once the default plugins are updated. Installer / Format

Notepad++ Portable is packaged in a Installer so it will automatically detect an existing installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in Format, so it automatically works with the Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

Story Topic:

John T. Haller's picture

First off, Notepad++ creates a local registry entry (we clean this up). Second, Notepad++ doesn't store paths relatively, so your most recently used files, sessions, light explorer and explorer settings break as you move PCs (we adjust these for you so they all work). Third, on a crash, Notepad++ will leave files behind on the local C: drive (we move these off and preserve them for restore during the next portable launch). Fourth, Notepad++ doesn't store its data in the proper location for the Platform to back it up (which you may not care about if you don't use the platform). Fifth, our package will switch languages with the platform in the next release (same caveat as number 4).

Just because something is a zip file and says it's portable, doesn't mean it's fully portable (doesn't leave files or registry keys behind, all settings work between launches) or works as well as it could with everything else in our lineup.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

then in that case your portable version supersedes the zipped version. good stuff

It's not what you know, its what you can prove.
