GIMP logoGIMP Portable 2.6.8 has been released. GIMP Portable is the full-featured GIMP image and photo editor bundled with a PortableApps.com launcher as a portable app, so you can edit your photos and images on the go. This new release updates the included GIMP to the latest release and has an improved launcher and installer. GIMP Portable Background Window and GIMP Portable Photoshop Layout are also available. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. Best of all, it's open source and completely free.

Features

GIMP Portable ScreenshotThe GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It has many capabilities. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image renderer, an image format converter, etc. Learn more about the GIMP...

GIMP Portable Background Window 2.1.3 and Photoshop Layout

GIMP Portable Extras ScreenshotTwo extras that enhance GIMP Portable are also available: GIMP Portable Photoshop Layout and GIMP Portable Background Window. The Photoshop Layout add-on adjusts GIMP's dock/toolbox to more closely approximate the layout of Adobe Photoshop. The Background Window plugin allows GIMP to occupy a single window. The background plugin does contain known bugs and is unsupported but should still be useful to many users.

New in This Release

GIMP has been updated to 2.6.8 (release notes). The launcher and installer have also been updated. Please note that GIMP no longer supports Windows 2000.

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

GIMP Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It's packaged in the PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

It says above: "GIMP Portable Help, GIMP Portable Background Window and GIMP Portable Photoshop Layout are also available."

I can see GIMP Portable Background Window and GIMP Portable Photoshop Layout, but not GIMP Portable Help:

https://portableapps.com/apps/graphics_pictures/gimp_portable
Add-Ons: GIMP Portable Photoshop Layout, GIMP Portable Background Window

When browsing through the project files on SF.net I see an old version of GIMP Portable Help, but not of the most recent version available at http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html (version 2.6.0).

Is a paf version likely to become available?

TIA,
James

We'd dropped GIMP Portable help a while ago since it was hopelessly outdated and there were no Windows installs that worked properly (I've removed it from the announcement). The files failed to open in a local install of GIMP on Windows... so the online help was the only option. If that isn't the case (ie, it works in GIMP local again), please create a new thread in the forums as a feature request. We'll probably need new installer setups for it as it's now a bunch of different language installers.

In that case, it's a local issue, too, since that file isn't present in the standard 2.6.8 install I did (or several versions prior), which means help isn't working in GIMP on Windows anywhere by default. That kinda indicates that the help files are a VERY low priority for GIMP... which is a little strange to me... so we probably won't rush to get out an installer. I've made a note of it in my GIMP notes and will look at it when I do an upcoming revision to fix a couple other bugs.

Please continue this discussion in the forums if anyone feels like it.

One of the built-in GIMP scripts keeps looking for a folder, which in the portable version is X:\PortableApps\GIMPPortable\Data\settings\brushes.

See this thread: https://portableapps.com/node/21459

If you could just add in that empty folder as described above, it would avoid that error message. Or at least, put this into the Known Issues of the GIMP page.
BTW, the current Known Issues section refers to a bug that is several versions out of date.

Thanks.

I made this half-pony, half-monkey monster to please you.
