µTorrent Portable 2.0 Build 18620 has been released by PortableApps.com. µTorrent is the world's most popular BitTorrent client. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). This release updates µTorrent to the latest release and improves portability and passing torrent files in. It's packaged as a portable app so you download on the go and it's in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. It's released as freeware for personal and business use.
Features
µTorrent is the world's most popular BitTorrent client. Most of the features present in other BitTorrent clients are present in µTorrent, including bandwidth prioritization, scheduling, RSS auto-downloading and Mainline DHT (compatible with BitComet). Additionally, µTorrent supports the Protocol Encryption joint specification (compatible with Azureus 2.4.0.0 and above, BitComet 0.63 and above) and peer exchange.
µTorrent was written with efficiency in mind. Unlike many torrent clients, it does not hog valuable system resources - typically using less than 6MB of memory, allowing you to use the computer as if it weren't there at all.
Various icon, toolbar graphic and status icon replacements are available, and creating your own is very simple. µTorrent also has support for localization, and with a language file present, will automatically switch to your system language. If your language isn't available, you can easily add your own, or edit other existing translations to improve them!
PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format
µTorrent Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

µTorrent Portable is available for immediate download from the µTorrent Portable homepage. Get it today!

uTorrent 2.0
What's the difference between this and the March 5th release?
New Build
uTorrent doesn't use sub-version numbers (like Firefox with 3.5.8, for example). They use major version, minor version and then build #. So this is 2.0.18620, a new version of uTorrent. New versions come out once or twice a month. For a changelog, you'd need to check out their site.
I got your reply to my thread
I got your reply to my thread in my email. I take it that it doesn't update like it should for some reason, or what's the deal on that?
It Does
It does pull the latest version and all the goodness. But I want the App's version in appinfo.ini to match for the updater that's about to drop.
Ah, so you're going to have
Ah, so you're going to have to update uTorrent Portable for every official release anyway then?
I like the sound of that last part, btw.

If you were on IRC, you'd have seen it
No fair.

Normal utorrent seems better
I've tried the last couple of utorrent builds here and they are more problematic than just using the regular utorrent.exe with an added settings.dat file in the same folder as the .exe file.
Not to complain about the work here at all. I love portableapps.com and everyones hard work here!!! However, this seems to be a case of "over complicating" things. The regular utorrent.exe is portable once you add a settings.dat file in the same folder, thus I wonder why you are bothering with all this restructuring and adding a portable.exe, app folder, etc. . . when utorrent only makes 4 main files anyways.
The problems I have had with the portable utorrent versions from here are
a) writing settings to user folders
b) tries to install when .torrent files are launched from firefox--utorrent must already be running and you must direct firefox to the utorrent.exe file instead of the portable.exe file.
c) when changing directories utorrent started writing to two directories, very odd, and I could not find another setting file in any of the user profiles. . .
I don't have these problems with the standard utorrent.exe (+settings.dat) file.
Maybe all we need for this is just an "unpacker" that puts the exe and dat file into the portableapps folder location????
thx
Doing It Wrong
Regular uTorrent is semi-portable. Unless you manually enter your settings relatively, they won't work when you move PCs. And all your torrents will fail as well as they are stored with full paths in uTorrent's settings file. The portable launcher adjusts both.
Only earlier versions had an issue with not passing in the secondary launch, usually done as an association from Firefox Portable (this was fixed in 2.0). Launching utorrent.exe directly within uTorrentPortable from Firefox may break it and cause utorrent to launch with local settings or try to install itself... don't do it. It also conforms to standard portableapps.com format, so all your settings and torrents are in a consistent place and will be easily backed up.
Like several portable apps, you should *NOT* change directories randomly. Portable apps are meant to install to a single path and then be moved around on a device with the drive letter changing (F:\PortableApps\uTorrentPortable to D:\PortableApps\uTorrentPortable). Changing paths will also break it, most likely causing multiple directories to be written to. A future release will warn you of this.
I would suggest installing once to a location and resetting your settings (with it closed, just delete the Data\ directory) and then not moving it around anymore. If you have additional issues, please post in the forums rather than comments in a news story.
link to discussions. . .
John, might I suggest if possible, and not a major pain, that a link to the forum discussion for an app be easily accessible in the news and regular download page of that app. We have support links and maybe in there, at least for apps that have a forum page, a link to their forum discussion. Unless I'm missing something.
BTW, hope I didn't sound unappreciative of all the work everyone does on portable apps here. . . I greatly appreciate everyone's effort here!!!
THX
Can't
There's no one forum discussion for each app. Otherwise we'd have 100 forums. We're moving to topic-based forums based on app type (Internet, Office, etc) except for the big ones like OpenOffice.org, Firefox, etc.
the part with portableapps
the part with portableapps that i hate is the filecopying and such
like openoffice works fine if you edit 1 file.
Utorent works fine with settings.dat
then manualy chage the settings of the folders in the settings dialog,
use like:
.\Incomplete
.\Complete
.\Torrents
.\TorrentsFinished
just these 4 settings to change once, thats no to much.
then start it with a workingdir
all 4 settings are relative to workingdir so please stop this copying stuff.
just create the settings.dat do the replace in it, if it is the first time. and run the file with a working dir, that would be a good launcher.
works fine werever you go.
when you add a new one paths are stored like:
.\Incomplete\The Free Energy Secrets Of Cold Electricity
It's part of the
It's part of the PortableApps.com format standard to separate the data from the app.
There are a few good reasons for this !
So make sure if you ever update your uTorrentPortable, to store your .torrent files and downloads on another location !
