PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

PortableApps.com Installer is packaged, appropriately, as a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Suite including the Menu and Backup Utility.

I think that we should have to option to browse for the icon from the application that is being currently packaged or use the default one from PortableApps.com Installer.

The reason for this, is that I carry with me the most used portable applications with me just in case I run in to some one that dose not know about PortableApps.com, and when I open the folder all I see is red icons and it is a pain in the behind.

But by having the installer use the applications icon(s) would make it faster and easier to find.

Well I hope that this can be added to the new release PortableApps.com Installer. Wink Smile

This sort of functionality will be being built into a new utility I've been working on. It's not really appropriate for inclusion in the Installer in its current form.

We don't permit PA.c Installer being built with anything but the official icon for the reasons stated below.

The PA.c Installer will only use the official PA.c Installer icon. Much as the Firefox and Thunderbird installers use standard Windows installer icons. Otherwise the installer and the apps themselves wind up with the same icons which is confusing for end users in looking at the installers vs apps and when installing as the installer and the app show up exactly the same in the Windows 7 toolbar.

All the apps start with the AppID which means they will be in alphabetical order in your directory. That means finding Firefox Portable is dead easy because the file is FirefoxPortable...paf.exe.

Going forward all apps must use the PA.c Installer for icons. No additional option is needed.

There's no reason to do it or to over-complicate it. It buys us nothing. The only possible reason to do it is to make installers easier to identify when looking at a directory which is completely negated by the fact that the spec requires the installer to start with the AppId, so they'll always be alphabetical and dead easy to find.

We don't need to create solutions for problems that don't exist.

I thought he meant appicon.ico (etc.). I see he didn't.
