So is it pronounced "freak"?

Also, can the PA platform updater not handle name-changing updates such as this?
I guess it would be complicated because you would have to make a new folder and then copy the settings to the new install and integrate them somehow...
Yeah, its much easier to uninstall BonkEnc and reinstall as Fre:ac. Maybe we could just put a notification in the updater to tell people to make the manual uninstall/upgrade via the PA site instead.

Of course if someone misses out on this it is not the end of the world, but I was just wondering.

Thank you for the update.

I don't know if there is a plan for this already or not (or even if it's feasible), but it makes sense that there could be a BonkEnc to Fre:ac release set as the current version of BoncEnc in the Update list, which when run would back up the BonkEnc settings, remove BonkEnc's App folder, install Fre:ac, and restore the settings to Fre:ac. That way people could just tell it to update and they would be switched over automatically (ofcourse there would have to be some kind of notification of what was happening so people wouldn't think that they had lost BonkEnc when it wasn't in the Menu any more)

In a perfect world, maybe something like this could be programmed.

I think that the instances that programs change names like this is only one in recent memory - BonkEnc to fre:ac. I don't think that OOo.org to LibreOffice qualifies since it is fork, not a straight rename.

Shouldn't programming efforts be directed to important stuff like categories, for example, than something that happens once every ten years?

I would hope that the platform and the world of FOSS continues to grow which would make this a legitimate problem. Especially when FOSS apps like GAIM...err...Pidgin have to change their names when forced to by big $$$ hoarding corporations. (Also it probably would be a good idea if forks or related S/W were announced as well... in a perfect world Wink

But as I said, it wouldn't be the end of the world if we couldn't do it, and I certainly didn't say it should be a top priority. I was just pointing it out since I follow the news feed and many of the forums and noticed the name change. If this platform is ever to be used by the lay person who doesn't know their RAMs from their ROMs then there should be a notification in the updater.

Of course as John said, it is just a beta right now and even if it wasn't, it still would be acceptable as the platform rocks as is and is being continuously updated!

But yeah I really just wanted to point that out to the devs so they could prioritize as they like.

We will be building that in, but as the updater is still in beta, there's not an optimal way to handle it yet. It didn't work ideally when we did it with the AppCompactor when I changed its AppID (and directory) to match the launcher and installer. Fear not, though, once the updater is stable and in use, we'll be adding custom programming to handle something like an app name change.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks a lot for updating fre:ac!

(And yes, it's pronounced "freak". Saw the pronounciation on the author's forum somewhere)

I tried the CVS version, and I can't wait for the new tagging features (embedded artworks, more detailled tags) to become available as stable.
