Browser Plugin
Does the new browser plugin work with Firefox Portable?
Nope
I'd guess nope. Or at least highly unlikely. Like nearly all browser plugins, it's keyed to a registry entry in HKLM that Sumatra PDF sets up on install. You're far better off having it launch the external app anyway. They always work better than browser plugins.

John, I would disagree about this. I was fine with opening PDFs externally before Sumatra offered a browser plugin - but now that there is one, I would love to use it inside Firefox. It's lean and so far works without any problems. I do lots of research and use tab sessions to stay organized. It's simply much more convenient to have PDFs open in browsing sessions that can easily be saved and restored. That's why it would be great if it could be done somehow.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work with Firefox Portable, either, but that doesn't mean it's impossible if you're cleverer than I am.
Admin Only
From that topic, it appears that, as I'd suspected, it requires actually registering the DLL (which requires admin rights via UAC) which makes an entry in HKLM in order for this to work. After run, you'll need to exit Firefox and unregister the DLL which may or may not actually let you safely eject the drive.
In short, the plugin is designed for local use only with no portable considered and you are FAR better off associating it and have Firefox Portable launch Sumatra Portable.

According to user Valynor in that thread, registering the DLL doesn't seem to be necessary in Opera and Iron Portable. (I haven't checked this yet and I don't know if this refers to the PortableApps versions or some other portable version.) However, the plugin didn't work in Firefox Portable even after I registered the DLL, although it did work in another portable Firefox version.
I see where you're coming from about safely ejecting - of course, having Firefox Portable launch Sumatra Portable is better when you're working from an external drive on somebody else's computer. However, I mostly use Firefox Portable on my own computers where I have admin rights and Sumatra is the default PDF viewer anyway. In this scenario, using the Sumatra browser plugin would be preferable. Whether it can be done with reasonable effort is another matter, of course.
