It has all the same great features of Notepad++ including support for multiple languages and an extensive plugin system, but there's nothing to install. This release updates Notepad++ to the latest release. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Suite. And it's open source and completely free. From what I understand, the updater database that the platform contacts requires someone (John probably) to tell it what the most current version available is. I suspect that this may not have been done as yet in the case of Notepad++ (so if the updater database has been told that 5.8.7 is the current version and you have that same version installed, it won't show that there is an update even if v5.9 has been released). Based on past releases however, the database is updated pretty quickly if someone points out that it has not yet been done (which you have done by posting that the update is not yet recognised).
