This version of Skype starting crashing on me on logging in. It turns out the new Skype does not like compatibility mode.

So if you find Skype crashing after updating and you have ever set either SkypePortable.exe or the skype.exe in SkypePortable>App>Skype>Phone to compatibility mode, EVEN if it was a past installation, go back to both exe's and make sure neither is set to compatibility mode (obviously this is for Windows 7).

To prevent the Skype icon remaining in your taskbar (ie the reason you would have used compatibility mode) go to Tools>Options>Advanced and uncheck "Keep Skype in the taskbar while I'm signed in".

I had no idea anyone had done this, but yes I would recommend against this as Skype has had the option not to be in the task bar since 5.1 I think.

An improvement in the portable version with the same version of the base app.

sorry - I'm blind - where can I get the former, working version ?

I'm using it on Win7 x64 without issue right now, so it's something in your setup or configuration. Please make a post in the forums with the exact issue, any error messages, install location, etc. Older versions are no longer available.
