VLC logoVLC Media Player Portable 2.0.8 has been released. VLC Portable is the popular VLC media player packaged as a portable app, so you can take your audio and video files along with everything you need to play them on the go. This release updates VLC to the latest version. It's packaged in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. And it's open source and completely free.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store in the PortableApps.com Platform.

Features

VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, XviD, WMV, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network. Learn more about VLC media player...

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

VLC Media Player Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. VLC's official site states 2.0.7 and has no download links for 2.0.8.

it doesnt download anything.

FYI, I am able to update VLC Media Player Portable 2.0.7 to 2.0.8 via the Platform Updater.

However, the VLCPortable_2.0.8.paf.exe file seems to have gone AWOL from the download page.

As an interim measure while things are sorted out, perhaps download the VLCPortable_2.0.7.paf.exe file from sourceforge at:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/portableapps/files/VLC%20Media%20Player%...

and install it before updating to the latest version 2.0.8 via the Platform Updater.

Cheers Smile

Use this direct link to download VLC Media Player Portable 2.0.8 (if clicking on the link does not brings you to the download, try manually copy the address and paste it onto the browser. I have to do the latter in order to get the download "save as" prompt ...)

Note: this link is originally the version 2.0.7 download link. I merely changed the 2.0.7 to 2.0.8 to download this version Smile

The SourceForge file release system is stuck again for our project. I've filed a ticket and will update as it is available.

The SourceForge issue is fixed and the file is available.

official VLC website states that original files were pulled because they were corrupted (I have tested and got VLC crashed on playing video)

so have you rebuild the portable installer with new files available again of official source from yesterday?
if not, rebuild package ASAP!

Do you know where on the official VLC site they announced the replacement of 2.0.8? I had a quick look but could not find it.

I have re-downloaded VLC 2.0.8 (Windows version) from the VLC site and it does seem to be a different file. Slightly different size and a different file date.

However, looking at the vlc.exe in my local install [newer release of 2.0.8] and the vlc.exe in the Portable Apps version they seem to be the same. Both have the same file date of 2013-07-31 which might mean the Portable Apps version is the updated release?

ps: I was going to try (for my first time) to compare the checksums, but Sourceforge won't let me download Checksum Control Portable (or anything else for that matter) at the moment Sad

On the news page, which is linked from their homepage, the news blurb for 2.0.8 now says the first binaries were broken.

It's mentioned on the news page:
http://www.videolan.org/news.html

So they did a silent swap, same version number, with no information on how to find out if you have the right one or the wrong one. However, as it's been working for all files I've thrown at it, I think we have the right one packaged.

You can download from SF again, they seem to have fixed their issue.

Which doesn't help us at all as we pull the files out of the installer before packaging. Same way someone who has already installed it doesn't have the installer around either. There should be a different build number or point in the About box, yet there is not.

Hi again

FWIW, a quick check of both the vlc.exe files for the revised vlc-2.0.8-win32.exe installer (extracted with 7Zip) and the PortableApps copy (previously mentioned by Grantwhy) matches :

SHA-1 485783C4AEF34873CC8AF5EAECA463D7D0D23D05
Date Modified: 31 July 2013 6.21 am

which suggests the copy used by PortableApps is the revised version.

The earlier copy of vlc-2.0.8-win32.exe installer is still downloadable via a reputable 3rd party website packs vlc.exe with a different SHA-1 786163EDC19DAC4227FC3C9030E4E7E672E272B4 and modified date 26 July 2013 6.56 am.

Hope this info helps
