logoGoogle Chrome Portable 37.0.2062.102 64-bit Test has been released. Google Chrome Portable is a web browser that runs web pages and applications with lightning speed. This is a test release of portablization of the 64-bit version of Google Chrome Stable. It is not recommended for regular end users. Point versions of this version will be pushed via the PortableApps.com Platform but not announced on the homepage or RSS feed. It's packaged as a portable app, so you can take your browsing experience with you and it's in PortableApps.com Format so it can easily integrate with the PortableApps.com Platform. It's partially open source freeware for personal and business use.

Update automatically or install from the portable app store (Advanced Apps enabled) in the PortableApps.com Platform.

64-bit Software and Portable Apps

This is a test release of Google's new 64-bit version of Chrome to see how portablization works and whether a dual-mode (32+64-bit) version of Chrome will make sense in an upcoming release. This would make Chrome Portable huge, weighing in at over 330MB - compared to Firefox Portable's 70MB - so testing real world usage and performance will be helpful. Note that Google has only released it as a manual download - existing users still get 32-bit, new downloads all default to 32-bit - so, it is not quite ready for general use. As always, our overall guidelines about 64-bit Software: Where It Fits Into Portable Apps are still applicable, though a bit outdated in terms of OS usage stats.

Features

screenshotGoogle Chrome's features include:

  • Quick to start up
  • Loads web pages in a snap
  • Runs web applications faster than ever
  • Designed for efficiency and ease of use
  • Search and navigate to web pages from the same box
  • Arrange and organize tabs however you wish — quickly and easily
  • Get to your favorite websites with just a click, from the thumbnails of your most visited sites in the New Tab page
  • Themes to add delight to your browser

PortableApps.com Installer / PortableApps.com Format

Google Chrome Portable is packaged in a PortableApps.com Installer so it will automatically detect an existing PortableApps.com installation when your drive is plugged in. It supports upgrades by installing right over an existing copy, preserving all settings. And it's in PortableApps.com Format, so it automatically works with the PortableApps.com Platform including the Menu and Backup Utility.

How can I double check, that the 64 bit version is running? I have downloaded the dev 64 bit version and installed it in a 32 bit version directory. If I open the settings and open "about" I only get the chrome
s version but not whether it is a 32 or 64 bit version.

Fire up task manager. You'll see lots of chrome.exe processes instead of chrome.exe *32.

John, you know really everything Smile Thanks for your help. What would the portable community do without you. That's no joke.

To my problem: If i have a look to the task manager I see still 32 bit versions. Hm, I double checked the chrome-bin dir and the file is from yesterday. The version (if I hover the mouse over) is 39.xxx - seems also correct. Nevertheless, the browser comes up with a 32 bit version. What do you think, John?

The Dev channel of portable is 32-bit. We make a single test version of 64-bit available: Stable 64-bit. And you have to specifically download it to test since it's 64-bit only and will fail on about 1/2 of machines (all XP+Vista plus 32-bit Win7/8/8.1).

Seems to be working great! I'm on windows 8.1. If you go for a 32-bit and 64-bit all in one version, will it be possible to shift between both modes without e.g. loosing tabs from last session if you have that option enabled?

Personally I think I'd prefer standalone versions of both architectures, I use 64-bit windows on all my machines, although I understand that keeping both in one version causes less confusion. But aren't most of us who use portable apps "pro" users who know the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit?

Hello!

I don't know if you even want feedback here. I've been using the portable 64-bit version since September and everything has been working good but a week ago I checked the size of the folder (GoogleChromePortable64) and it is 1,34 GB! I've tried everything, deleting all data, tried some history clean add-ons as well with no success. I understand that it will be bigger than the 32-bit version but not 1,34 GB. I only use Chrome for minimal stuff e.g. Chrome Remote Desktop and Google Play Music uploads (my main browser is FF) so it shouldn't even be much history or cache and it should've shrunk when that was deleted.

I also have the 32-bit version of Chrome portable and that folder is "only" 347 MB but that is without any clean-up done.

You'll need to determine which folder is large to figure out why the app is so big. Use WinDirStat Portable to figure it out.
