I am using a lot of freeware & open source tools. Most times I prefer the portable version because I can use them on my own comp, on the go and after crashing and reinstalling windows. Most of the smaller tools don`t have it`s own updater.
UpdateStar is quite good but it only works for installed and registered programs.
I also tested secunia psi beta, it searches the hole disk, but after two hours of scanning it doesn`t show many any non up to date versions and the beta is really kinda unstable.
Can you advice me some other tool which scans the hole disk for all programs and informs me about updates?
There's the wfx_Versions extension based on the Versions plugin for Total Commander. You have to specify the program and webpage, but it works for any program that has version info on a webpage. You have to keep track of the webpage, but you also don't have to worry about having outdated information if the page's address changes or the site gets a new design.
There's even an awesome tutorial on the .list format included.
