Firefox Portable accidental auto-update

I was unaware that the "Automatically download and install updates" option was set in my Firefox Portable 2.0.0.5 from Portable Apps.com.

Unexpectedly, while running Firefox Portable from my USB flash drive, Firefox informed me it had "downloaded and verified" an update to "Firefox 2.0.0.9" and "Click Restart Firefox Now to install the update now. Click Later to close this dialog and continue working. Firefox will install the update the next time it starts." I was going to click "Later", but decided to leave that dialog box hanging for now, in case there's a way to back out. The Update History in Options shows "install pending".

Nothing was said about it being the Portable version, so now I'm concerned that it's about to write (or already has) to the host machine, my Vista laptop, on which I have "Regular Firefox" 2.0.0.9, which I normally use way more than Portable.

I don't want to stop or restart the Portable session I'm running until I decide how to handle this.

These are my concerns:

1. The best scenario, I think, if possible, would be to just back out of the install. CAN I DO THAT? HOW?

2. If not, how can I tell if the 2.0.0.9 update is the Portable version or not? Does Firefox Portable 2.0.0.5 have enough sense not to update to Regular FF? (If not, maybe that option should be unavailable).

3. If the update is Regular Firefox, could settings from my USB Portable version override, or get "mixed" in with, the ones already on my laptop hard drive? (ie: Extensions, etc).

My main concern is to avoid messing up the Regular Firefox already on the laptop.

I can restore the Portable version back to my flash drive simply by restoring a fresh backup image of the flash drive I made this morning.

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

The Portable version is written to allow downloading updates automatically.

Does anyone know of someone

Does anyone know of someone that has Firefox Portable 2.0.0.9 installed, or am I the first?

P.S. We's free (sometimes).

read the FAQ

Updates: Is it ok to let Firefox update itself?
A. Yes. The ability to use the Firefox update system is preserved in Firefox Portable. The only difference is that it will ask you before doing it. This is because updates on flash ram drives will take quite a bit longer than an update on a hard drive (up to a few minutes) and you're more likely to run out of space. Be sure you have at least 35MB free as Firefox' updater won't check and will crash when it runs out of space. If this happens and Firefox Portable winds up corrupted, just install a new copy of Firefox Portable on top of your existing one (your data and settings won't be changed).

Yes, I saw that FAQ

As you quoted, "The only difference is that it will ask you before doing it." But mine never asked me first!

Still I'm not confident this is Portable 2.0.0.9. I've been combing the net and I can't find any ref to a release of or download available of "Firefox Portable 2.0.0.9". How can I tell if the 2.0.0.9 update is the Portable version or not, before it restarts?

Relax.

You will be just fine.

Restart FF and worry about something else like who our next president will be or something.

Firefox Portable 2.0.0.9 is mine! It's Aliiive!

Thank you so much one and all!

And a special tip o' the hat to Mr. John T. Haller for the fine work done on such a great product and website!

I'm a little wet behind the ears, and perhaps a little red in the face as well, for all the drama, but hey, now I've already got my Portable maxxed out and running great.

I was a wee bit gunshy after an "Easy" Vista Anytime Upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate a couple of weeks ago, that froze in the middle of the process and ended up costing me about a day to get squared away.

Thanks again!

Np.

I see why you were reluctant to do the update now. I hope you enjoy.

p.s. I had the same trouble with FFP 2.0.0.7. It took me a little while to figure it out also. Smile

"Really?"

Essentially, this whole thread can be boiled down to "I read what's written and it answers my question, but I won't believe it until I ask in the forums and have the answer repeated."

Which is the same as telling someone something and them saying "Really?"

The answer is: "Yes, really."

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
