PTB Address file.

I have deleted all of my emails.

I have maybe 800 Addresses in my PTB 1.5.

Is this the reason that my PTB file is over 65mb?

I deleted over 100 addresses but it seems to make little or no difference.

I did an export to ldif file for my addresses and it is only 460kb.

As you know space is everything on a USB drive.

Compact Folders

Thunderbird doesn't remove messages when they are deleted. You'll need to compact your folders. You can do this by selecting the mailbox in question (eg a standalone POP account or Local Folders) and then selecting File and Compact Folders.

You can set Thunderbird to do this automatically within Tools - Options - Advanced - Offline & Disk Space - Disk Space.

Done

Sorry should have already told you that.

Already have done that.

Compacted all the folders many times.

I am about ready to try a fresh copy.

Is exporting the addresses to a ldif file the only thing I have to do to save the address files?

I can copy the settings manually for the email setup.

news folders can't be compacted

If you use PTB or TB to read newsgroups, the .msf files can grow to be pretty large, too. Right now I have a half dozen or so .msf files that are 1-2 M each. Compact folders doesn't seem to do anything for those files. The only way I've found to reduce their size is:
- close PTB/TB
- delete the offending (or all) .msf files in the News folder and it's subfolders
- restart PTB/TB

The .msf files will be recreated but you'll have to download the headers again and it may or may not (it's been variable for me) loose the read/unread status. When I've done this I make sure that all messages are marked read, delete the files, download the headers and mark them all read.

No news folders

I don't use PTB or FF to read newsgroups.

I solved the problem by starting with a fresh copy.

PTB folder is now just 24mb. I'll keep an eye on it.
