I noticed recently 2 new firefox versions were posted. Is it wise to spend the energy on apps that have auto update to also release the individual updates?
I admit to the dilemma people could think it's an outdated version.

The same reason that Mozilla releases new packages. It's best if people do one download and have the latest. Existing users can auto-update (unless they'd like the new features in the newer launcher, of course).
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
I have to say when it comes to FFPortable, I think it's better to wait for the official package. If you auto-update FFPortable, it WILL screw up your registry entries if you have a local install. It sets everything to point to your portable install - app paths, uninstall paths, everything. It's really annoying.
Best idea if you really want to auto-update is to update your portable install FIRST, then update your local install to *reset* the screwed reg entries.
This of course is NOT John's fault, it's just the way the Mozilla updater works.
thats true

Is this confirmed? The auto updater fiddling with your system and all?
If so, can it be turned off (or skipped?) I only see the "ubdate has installed, please restart)
If this updater can be disabled I would preferable have it disabled by default I think.
Hmm I see my portable version as default icon in registry... also ddeexec, shellopen...

UNtoggle All should take care of that, No?
Before you UNtoggle them first select:
Ask me what I want to do
I believe it has been the default of my FFP since the days of PFF, but it may have changed since those days with licensing changes between John and Mozilla. I do recall that there were some FFP defaults from the early days that he had to change but if you update over your existing version you kept the old defaults.

Um, Tim? Did you happen to follow the links I provided?

Is autoupdate turned off by default? Did I turn it on by accident? Confusing. Thanks for the info / links.
Would this violate the description of being a true portable app?

"Update Prompt - As updating the browser on a flash drive can be very slow, Firefox Portable asks you if you'd like to update rather than doing it automatically."
So I guess I was not correct in thinking that was one of the things that changed, it should prompt you. I have the prompt turnrd off as well as I always get my updates here
Not sure why yours it updating itself if you didn't change anything.
Sorry

Not sure what you mean by that.

I ment the thing of not leaving any information behind in registry...
If it's: "Update Prompt - As updating the browser on a flash drive can be very slow, Firefox Portable asks you if you'd like to update rather than doing it automatically." and the updater leaves stuff in registry, I guess this should be disabled by default. If it asks one might think the updater would leave no trace so its ok to do.
Yes, I do believe you are correct, kind sir. I was just giving you a hard time anyway...

message upon completing. Although FF portable doesn't automatically restart, it still seems to work fine, opens the tabs that were open before updating plus the update tab, reports being the new version correctly in Help and can't find any new update.
Looks like it works, but I wonder if there's reason for caution anyway. Have to dig deep and find those error logs it talks about. Anyone else had this?

It's a courtesy to new people who want to download FxP. If an old version is up, visitors will get the impression that the site isn't updated very often.
As for portability, the autoupdate feature will only look for minor version updates (e.g. 2.0.0.9 -> 2.0.0.10), and not for major releases (e.g. 2.0 -> 3.0). John will generally only look at major releases for changes in portability issues anyway because minor updates don't generally change it in a way that would require changes in the launcher. Which means it isn't generally necessary to download new versions of FxP for minor releases.
Vintage!
he improves the launcher and then its justified to download johns new version...:)
