I set the portable thunderbird as my default email client. When I click on an email link on a web page (Firefox 2.0.0.10), Thunderbird launches as expected, but it also activates the new account setup wizard, which closes Thunderbird unless I go ahead with creating a new account.
If Thunderbird is already launched before I click on an email link, then I don't get this problem.

You should NEVER set a portable Apps as default.
if you do it wil be launched locally and thus prompting you to create a new account cause you dont have a local one, justa "portable" one.

Thanks Simeon. Yeah that was the 1st time I set it as default. I saw the System Defaults in Thunderbird options so I just had a play with it.
So what do you do when you see an email link on a web page?
I think you have 2 options:
open portable TB and click on it
or
copy it via clipboard.
Sometimes the first doeasnt work caus the link always opens in your default mail client. in that case you'd have to copy it manually.

I find that shortcuts are continually being hijacked, whether on my computer or in a web browser. One can never be sure what one is going to get. I do the copy and paste routine a lot. It may not be as convenient, but at least I know what I'm getting, e.g. I don't get Outlook Express when I want Thunderbird.
Besides, unless they are doing some tricky stuff with javascript or HTML character entities, anyone who has left a valid, unprotected email address on a public web page is likely to have a mailbox so full of spam that your little message is going to be a lost in the clutter.

Yes I'm aware of the amount of malwares on the web. I only click on a selected few of legit sites.
I've been using TP for about a week on a USB stick for use on my home desktop & laptop. (It was the only solution I could find that would allow me to send & receive e-mail from both machines -- and I find I like TP a LOT better than OE.)
I have TP set in the program as my default e-mail client, and I've e-mailed a number of web pages (stories from NY Times, etc) without a problem. (I also have it set on both computers as the default program to call when I double-click a .eml file.)
However, instead of using the "Send E-mail" link embedded in the stories, I use the "Send Page" button on my browser. This works with IE 6&7, but I can't find the "Send Page" button to do this in FF 2.0.0.3.
I've never encountered the problem betaman mentioned.

I have fixed that problem simply by making TP run automatically as soon as I plug my Flash Drive...
