Help !!

I was very comfortable with my 512 MB USB with around 100 MB public area and the remaining 400 MB partition locked using the 'software key' provided with the thumbdrive. But last day when I tried to open the drive in my computer, an error message came that 'there is no drive in the port'.
I could see it there in 'My Computer',but the capacity was shown as zero ( used space-o, free space Shock ) in its properties .

The fact is that the software key and a few files kept inside the public area vanished due to some unknown reasons and the same public area is acting as a zero space, preventing the access to the drive now . I am quite sure that my Portable apps are safe inside the other partition but no way to get inside or even open the drive. I tried to format the drive to bring the drive back to life. But the command failed showing an error message that 'u have not enough memory to format the drive, so try again later. ( no use).

Any way out? What's the real problem? Better to throw it away and buy a new one??? I have a perfect back up in my system...
But i like him a lot.... He is my first USB.

OEM

I'm pretty sure you need to talk with the Flash Drive supplier [OEM, Original Equipment Manufacturer] about this [you did not provide name or model].

This really is not a portable apps issue.

I think that formating the drive before contacting the drive supplier was a Major mistake. If there was info in that partition/area which is unique to that drive even they may not be able to help you at this point. Still, contact them and see if they have a solution.

Good Luck,
Tim

Before you toss him...

I had this problem.
-First off, try restarting the computer and putting the drive in on restart. It may force it to work properlly for every plug and play attempt afterwords. Don't know how or why, but it's worth a shot.

-If that don't work, ...
...is the connection loose due to a mistake in connection? Try a different port and be sure the connection is good.
...are the ports on your PC good? Try another computer (even a mac) to see if you can access your files.
...is the part that's pluged into the computer loose? Try to see if it moves when it is not in the computer. If it does the only way to repair this problem is to send it for a replacement (this is how my first flashdrive went to the digital graveyard... :'-{ How sad.)

It happened...

... to me a couple of times... I just safely eject the drive and put it back and/or restart the PC...

If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port,
and the bus is interrupted as a very last resort,
and the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort,
then the socket packet pocket has an error to report Biggrin

More details

Thanks to all friend who attended my post.
Attn:
Actually I haven't formatted the drive yet though I tried for that so many times. The system refused to format the drive showing a message post.

Details of my 'sick' USB

A Data 2.0 Disk -PD1
512 MB
'my flash'
Made in Taiwan
P/N: 75ICAG0030
www.adata.com.tw
with life time warranty

One of my friends bought him from Dubai and presented it to me last year!

I tried everything as suggested in the second and third replies -also in two other machines. But the results were the same.

Today I tried a data recovery software provided with a camera card reader ( my photographer friend helped me to try this). To my surprise it identified all the approx 175 MB data stored in the locked partition and started recovering it. This indicates that the drive's capacity is not 'Zero' as shown in his properties and at least he has the space to store all the above data somewhere inside..

I cancelled the process in the middle ( naturally )since i have an exact copy of my Portable apps and other data in my desktop and what I actually require is not that data ....

I don't think that it would be easy to return 'him' to the manufacturer for a replacement. It may be more expensive than buying a new one. And as u all know, I am not for a new one, but to bring him back to life...After all he is my first USB... Hence this research...

I hope I have explained almost all aspects...

Is it a coincidence that

Is it a coincidence that there is another topic from another user with a "My Flash" that has stopped working in almost this same way?

I don't know what it means, but if the two of you are aware of each other maybe you can benefit from each other's troubleshooting.

I wasn't talking about

I wasn't talking about the technical problem :P,
I just plain missed the fact that you were talking about the same drive Sad

I usually catch things like that and he did Smile

A little in house banter. It may not help your situation but it happens in groups like this, sorry Sad
