Eyeball Chat

Hey portable app gurus!

I really like yahoo messenger, particularly the video chat portion of it, but I know that is closed source and isn't an option.

I found this app out there that is currently free.

http://www.eyeballchat.com/

I looked through the TOS agreement and didn't see anything about redistribution. This is actually an LE version as they do plan to charge for this service at some point. In any case if it's easy to port that would be great. It has all the features plus a very robust proxy section to use with tunnelier portable.

What do you think guys?

Nah, thanks.

Nah, thanks. I switched to Open Source to get rid of all Shareware, Freeware, Nagware and Light Editions that could turn on you and turn into full commercial software at any moment as the user base has become large enough.

I would appreciate if forum posts would concern themselves a bit more with Open Source and a bit less with the commercial stuff. Maybe it's the time to set up an commercial apps forum, one that I don't need to read.

But who knows, maybe other people would find this interesting.

My preference is Open Source!

Well,

They can still choose to make the program closed source and commercial at any point, but they need to either have all copyright assigned to one person/company or they need the permission of every contributor.

I completely Agree!

But do you know of any open source project that allows for video chat with yahoo and the other IM servers?

I've looked high and low and have found nothing. Apparently it's not that important to the OS community.

Snarky

Well, even though "Apparently it's not that important to the OS community" seems a bit snarky, you could be right.

On the Yahoo side, I don't know anyone at all that still uses Yahoo as their preferred way to IM. Even via other software like Pidgin or Miranda IM. Sure I have 3 friends out of my 150 contacts that keep their Yahoo account active as a backup or to talk to a couple people... heck, I keep mine around just in case... but I never use it anymore.

Like it or not, video chat never really caught on. Initially it was bandwidth issues. Later it was issues getting around NAT on routers. Then there's the fact that most users simply don't have a webcam. Out of all the people I know in real life, I don't know anyone that uses video chat. None of my friends in New York City. None of my friends and family in New England or on the West Coast.

Remember, open source is mostly about individual developers scratching an itch... working on something that they want to use for themselves. It could simply be that most open source developers don't give a damn about video chat because they have no use for it.

RE: Snarky

Sorry...I didn't intend it to be that way. I was just quoting the FAQ from Pigin.

I do understand that OS is about the masses and giving alternatives. I completely agree, and for one, greatly appreciate that there are coders out there that contribute and make it possible.

As for the webchat...I guess i am one of the few then. I cam chat whenever I can especially for meeting new people online. It's worked out pretty well and I find quite a few people that still use yahoo.

Just out of curiosity...what is the IM of choice now a days?

Well

In the Closed Source world, I think it's largely Windows Live Messenger (MSN) as people seem to sign up for Hotmail accounts for some reason (word of mouth?). Yahoo and and AOL IM's are certainly popular as well. And in the open source world, I think Pidgin is one that's up at the top, if not top.

AOL

Actually, AOL has been the #1 IM forever overall. But it greatly varies by area of the world. Some places ICQ is #1. I think there are other regional-only ones like Gadu Gadu (?) as well.
