Shortcut Creator 4U3 {Newly Rewritten} Beta 4

Ok so I skipped beta 2 mostly because I set the version of beta 1 to 2.99.0.2 instead of 2.99.0.1.
Any way heres whats new..
2.99.0.4
Fixed temp directory selection in advanced options.
Fixed temporary files not being deleted.
Fixed issue if temp directory changed mid process.
2.99.0.3
Rearranged the interface a little.
Grouped the configure and create buttons.
Simplified a couple options.
Added some field validation to make sure there is at least a name and path.
2.99.0.2 {first beta release}
Rearranged the interface.
Added additional functionality,..
The shortcut name, icon, working directory, and version fields are automatically populated when you browse for the exe.

Of course the advanced functions are also still there if you want to use them.
Preview & Download

Now its even easier to add your portableapps to the Launchpad.
Just browse for the app, then click "Add Shortcut"

Cool

Yea, it's gettin' there.

Was the 'Start Automatically with Launchpad' in the .NET version? Cause that's a handy feature.

Nice work.

I believe it is

I believe it is, but I would have to check to be 100%.

If it's not it can still be

If it's not it can still be set in the LaunchPad settings menu.

U3 Stuff

Since this has to do with U3 which we're not supporting (and not portable apps), I'm not sure if we should allow promotion of it at all on this site. We're trying to encourage people not to get stuck in U3.

John, Be Nice

John, Be Nice Smile

We want PortableApps to be usable in as many environments as possible don't we?

All that's being discussed here is putting a shortcut to a NON-U3 app on the LaunchPad.

Helping someone to put a shortcut to FFP, TBP, etc on a "different" menu system is not a bad thing. Not everyone likes or needs the PAM/PAS/PAP. We should be Open Minded as well as Open Source.

As far as "stuck in U3". Some people are not "stuck" Blum
We use U3 for U3 things, and Portable Apps for PortableApps Stuff, and PStart for PStart Stuff, etc, etc.

I used the earlier version of the Shortcut Creator to put PStart on the LaunchPad, that was it.

With Greatest Love and Respect,
Happy New Year John Smile

Promotion

The point of this site is to promote portable apps. And self-promotion exceptions are made for open source portable applications. What we're talking about here, though, is a tool (not an app) that only works with a closed-source system that's portable app and open source unfriendly. This tool only works with U3. And we don't let people promote U3 apps here (open source or not). So, is it that worthy of an exception?

Personally, I say no. I know I haven't gotten my tool to transition from the unsupported U3 apps to the active portable ones out yet, but that's going to be the path recommended for U3 folks. We won't be recommending or supporting use of portable apps with the U3 platform as it's designed to ONLY work with U3 apps.

So, ultimately, it comes down to... how to we help people move away from U3? In my opinion, a tool like this doesn't really help in that process.

Transition is the whole point of the app

The main point of the app is to allow users to transition from the U3 apps to PortableApps without having to loose the menu they are familiar with.
Eventually they will figure out that PortableApps is simply a better platform and take the plunge to get rid of U3 all together.

Yeah!

Its just like making a GNOME/KDE Linux/BSD desktop look like Microsoft Windows so it will make the transition easier! (I cannot believe I said Micro$oft Winblow$ as Microsoft Windows, well Patrick somehow convinced me to stop with the $ thing here...)

Very good!!!

It looks awsome SmithTech. I don't seem to be getting any bugs so far (and I have already used it on XP, 2000, 98 and Vi$ta. My school has a very diverse set of computers Blum ).
Thanks,
Bensawsome

you can change the temp dir in the advanced options.
its fixed in beta 4.
I may add an ini file in a future release so it will remember your preferences.
