Like XAMPP's ability to be dropped into a Linux "opt" directory and be run, a 'Portable Package Manager' that can be dropped into a Linux "opt" directory would be enormously useful.
It would work like the already existing Synaptic Package Manager, or if permitted, an actual "Portable Synaptic Package Manager".
Norm,
As a fellow linux user, I understand how valuable a package manager is. Almost any Linux distro already has one tailored to it's repositories, be they .deb or .rpm based. You shouldn't have access to /opt, or any directory outside of your Home unless you have admin/root rights; in which case, you can get to the installed package manager.
That said, the other problem with your request is this is a Windows-oriented site. These portable apps are all Windows-based, although many will run under linux using wine.
Good luck finding the appropriate site to post you request.
Sorry about posting a Linux request. I was thinking 'Xampp' and wasn't focusing on what I was doing.
Thanks for the advisement on the "opt" directory.
I'll post a different request.
I also think it`s a great idea, portable package manager or portable apps for linux...
But it won`t happen soon. :|
