ClamWin: fails 'could not start process'

Offers to update virus database then this error message comes up:

Could not start process:
".\freshclam.exe" --stdout --datadir="..\..\..\Data\db" --config-file="c:\docume~1\staff\locals~1\temp\tmpif-o93" --log="c:\docume~1\staff\locals~1\temp\tmpz3s53o"
Error: This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

This was running on a Dell Dimension running XP with SP2. Folder was located on C:\ drive (loading definitions as a prelude to using it elsewhere). This is with latest version downloaded yesterday from portableapps.com

well...

the path look kinda weird to me. Maybe it cant handle the "~"?
I´d try it from my desktop.

the ~ is just

windows downcoverting vfat names to 8.3 format - perfectly normal.

Which exe are you running? Are you running (...)\ClamWinPortable\ClamWinPortable.exe and then clicking on update, or are you trying to run something from (...)\ClamWinPortable\App\ directly?

If you're running something from the App folder directly, you will get that sort of message, since all of the config data is modified on the fly by the launcher - ClamWinPortable.exe

I've just run an update cleanly and successfully from mine, a C: drive copy, and the command line was
.\freshclam.exe" --stdout --datadir="..\..\..\Data\db" --config-file="c:\docume~1\jimbo\locals~1\temp\tmpnc_jvi" --log="c:\docume~1\jimbo\locals~1\temp\tmpi5_gop

Which is pretty much exactly the same as yours is. This is On a Dell Latitude C810 with XP-SP2, so a good comparison there, too.

What happens if you try to run something like a memory scan?

Hi Moving the folder

Hi

Moving the folder anywhere else on the computer (including desktop) fails. I have tried both the link in the ClamWinPortable folder & directly clicking the binary in \ClamWinPortable\App\clamwin\bin with the same result.

Scanning files & memory does not appear to work -the scan button at the bottom remains faded out, though with a lack of definitions this is hardly suprising. I also tried editing the file locations in the options menu, again to no avail.

Further suggestions very welcome, thanks for the interest.

If you don't have any

If you don't have any customized configuration options, I'd suggest that you run

chkdsk /f Secret

on the drive from a command prompt, substituting the drive letter of the drive where you want it to run.

Then delete the entire directory containing ClamWinPortable, and reinstall. Before you install, right click on the ClamWin_Portable_0.92.paf.exe, choose Properties, and make sure there is a Digital Signature on the file.

You might want to put it into a folder, rather than directly into the root of your drive (that is, into c:\PortableApps\ClamWinPortable, rather than c:\ClamWinPortable, or your Desktop), to see if that helps.

Not real high expectations that those suggestions will work, but it will eliminate some possible reasons, and let troubleshooting focus on others.

HiI have recently run disk

Hi

I have recently run disk checking on the drive - I thought chkdsk was deprecated on XP & shouldn't be used? I have also tried mving the folder to multiple locations & it didn't work.

I cannot check the digital signature.or try the command line options. AVG has just detected a virus in the folder & I have deleted it. It may be a false positive but I am not prepared to take that chance on what is a business machine.

Maybe I will wait until the next upgrade & try again. As a courtesy i will start a fresh post with the details.
