Upgrade

Everything you mentioned is outdated and not supported any longer. You should upgrade Thunderbird Portable to the current version (2.0.0.9) and then upgrade the webmail extension to 1.3.1 and the hotmail piece of webmail to 1.2.14. Things like Hotmail change and the extensions get updated to keep up with these changes. The webmail extension dropped support for Thunderbird 1.5.x, as have most extensions at this point. Plus, there are security enhancements that you should have with the latest Thunderbird release.

If you upgrade all 3, you should be all set.

In-place upgrade

Just grab a new version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Portable Edition and install it over your current one. It'll handle the upgrade and won't affect your email settings. Restart TB and ensure all is well.

Then head to the webmail extension download page and download webmail and the hotmail piece. (Right-click on them and save them to your desktop). To install them in Thunderbird, just clck Tools and then Add-Ons from the main menu. Then click the Install button and find those two extension files you saved to your desktop. Install webmail first and then webmail-hotmail. When you restart Thunderbird, it should be working again.

If you need helping configuring the webmail extension itself, you can post a note in the Thunderbird Webmail Extension Forum.

The menu on the left

Click on the menu on the left, Mozilla Thunderbird Portable edition, download it, and run it from the PortableApps Menu - Options - install a new app. There are pointers to how to upgrade at

hotmail

You probably want to upgrade your Thunderbird Portable. It's pretty painless.

There are instructions for using hotmail as if it were a POP3 account from a mail program (OE) but it should be similar for Thunderbird:

In Outlook Express, on the Tools menu, click Accounts.
Click Add, and then click Mail.
Type your name, and then click Next.
Type your full Windows Live Hotmail e-mail address, and then click Next.
Enter the following information, and then click Next:
In the My incoming mail server is a box, click POP3.
In the Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server box, type pop3.live.com.
In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server box, type smtp.live.com
Type the account name and the password for your Windows Live Hotmail account. Clear the Remember password check box unless you're the only person with access to the computer. Make sure that the Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA) check box isn't selected.
Click Next, and then click Finish.
In the Internet Accounts window, on the Mail tab, click the Windows Live Hotmail account that you added, and then click Properties.
On the Advanced tab, under Server Port Numbers, enter the following information, and then click OK:
In the Incoming server (POP3) box, type 995.
In the Outgoing server (SMTP) box, type 25.
Under both Outgoing mail (SMTP) and Incoming mail (POP3), select the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) check box.

This isn't really a Thunderbird Portable question; you might get more or better answers if you go to the Mozilla Thunderbird web site.
