@Simeon - Errors

Simeon, I'm seeing multiple errors in the logs generated by your user account (and only yours). In the error log it's a mySQL error about "Got a packet bigger than 'max_allowed_packet'" while it's attempting to update the cache of pages you are browsing apparently.

So, are you seeing any errors? Are you doing anything odd while browsing? COuld you try logging out, clearing your cache, and logging back in?

weird

I didn't notice anything unusual.
When did it happen for the last time? You say it only occurs with my account. Maybe it occurs while I update the german news page (https://portableapps.com/de). The last entry was sometime yesterday adding the latest FF entry. Cold that be the problem?
Thats just a suggestion because I think thats one of the things only I do (Marko gave me the privileges).

I always use Firefox Portable so my cache shouldn't be a problem, should it?
I hope we get this sorted out.

EDIT

I just remembered that today I accidentally closed a tab where I was writing a comment and I couldn't get it back although I tried. So if the errors only occurred today that might have caused it. I then rewrote the comment but without logging of and clearing my cache before. I just closed all the other tabs, went to the Recent Posts page, clicked on the topic and wrote a new comment. Does not finishing a comment upsets Drupal?

Yeah.

I thought I'd mention too, when saving pages, it takes a long time to save it. I'm guessing it's because of a misconfiguration.

Nope

That's just because the site is busy and Drupal isn't the most efficient at editing nodes when there are a couple thousand people hitting the site.

does that mean

I should only edit pages at 3 o'clock at night? Smile
Or is it something else?

Major pages

Major pages should be edited off hours when possible. Edits should be performed only once (you should never edit, reedit, reedit a page). That's what preview is for.

Preview Required

I don't like the whole preview required thing when editing nodes now. Anyone who's editing major nodes now knows that they should preview before actually posting, now this is just one more page for me and everyone to load on my slow internet.

Testing

I'm testing it out for a few days. One extra click isn't that big a deal for a post (considering that each post and each edit slows the whole site down but previews don't). And this doesn't affect comments at all... only posts.

Yes, it is

It's a lot extra bother for a little gain.

How

How? It's a single extra click when you're posting a new forum topic or editing a topic or a page on the site. Things which it's fine if you take a moment to ensure you're saying what you want.

It's about reducing load on the server. Previews are a gimme. And if previews can reduce the number of people who add and then edit and then edit a post in the forum or a page on the site, then the goal is accomplished. Remember, when a node is being added or edited, the entire site temporarily stalls. The more we can do to avoid that, the better.

I Agree

I guess that makes sense, but I'm still with Ryan that it really is a lot of extra hassle though it may not seem so, especially when editing release nodes just to make a small update.

Then again I'm picky.

But

But that's exactly when you're *supposed* to preview... so you don't accidentally edit, skip the preview, realize there's a typo and then edit again (slowing down the site twice).

Good for me

It's actually good for me, too. I'm one of those non-preview folks... it's so easy to skip it. But now that it's required, I find myself actually checking the preview to ensure it's ok... I just did it for the FileZilla Portable pre-release post.

Pshh.

I'm perfect anyway. Blum
Really though, I write it in Notepad++ and use it's Aspell spell checking, so I've no need. I personally don't believe we should be held accountable for Drupal's inadequacies Blum
*hides from Rob*

Maybe a way to turn it off in account options? Please? Smile

Lol Yea

I always hated it when people didn't re-read there work in school and completely relied on the spell check. It read something like:

Their we're too of them that could here the noises as the whether got worse in the the normally quit dessert that knight.

I

completely agree with forcing preview brefore posting, after all we should all be previewing anyway, so what's the bit issue, especially if it reduces load? It might help Ryan sort out his spelling to Wink

Well...

Whether it's intentional or not, the settings have been changed so you have to click Preview first. Can you change it back please? It's a hell of a pain to click on Preview now before clicking submit.

OK John

I dint know that. I think I did it without preview and had to redo it.
Its a little tricky to find "off hours" in the 24/7 world of the Internet but I guess I just go check out sourceforges downloads and choose their minimum Smile
I think "off hours" is something like now (11 am CET) when the whole US is sleeping...

I meant

I meant, it may be an effect of some anti-spamming rules to reduce load on the server. Maybe not.

Speaking of Spam and Errors...

I can't post a new forum topic because it says my IP was used for spam. I was planning to post a Tux Paint Portable...
