Firstly, it's possible my main issues here are due to a messed up profile (but I don't think so). I won't have access to my home profile until, well, I go home, then I'll do some testings.
So I was just trying FF3b2 on another computer and I ran into a couple problems I don't experience in the non-portable version:
- I disable extensions.checkCompatibility in about:config. I use it to use old FF2 extensions until FF3 final is released and extension authors rush to update instead of doing it during the beta like they should. This should cause all extensions to work (extensions.checkSecurity might also need to be disabled). However non-compatible extensions still do not run. Firefox seems to be ignoring my setting.
- Attampting to install or upgrade extensions fails with: Error: e.location.getItemLocation(e.id) is undefined
Source File: file:///H:/PortableApps/FirefoxPortable/App/firefox/components/nsExtensi...
Line: 3802
These problems do not occur in the non-portable version (not sure if the error message still happens but installing extensions still works).
I also just hit a little problem which I'm more confident isn't a profile issue. If you set your download directory to your portable drive, the drive letter isn't adjusted from computer to computer as your portable drive letter changes.
Try enabling cache. FF2 has cache+extension issues.
Download directory changes. It just won't work if you select the root (which is due to a combination of the way Firefox stores paths and the way the launcher's prefs updater works). Incidentally, using a portable DL directory is only recommended if you're using a portable hard drive.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Ah, I'm guessing you disabled Disk Cache in Portable Firefox? OK then I'll try that.
FYI, I was using PortableDrive:\Downloads.
I suppose I could set it in about:config manually and see if it works with relative paths.

I'm ... lleet. Is that like a leet llama?

I always loved watching the llamas bash their heads to the beat.
