problem on the fly

i'm in a travelling time
and using portableapps on pubblic internet places
really makes me feel safe... was some time that i was looking to find a portable solution to keep my data safe
anyway
i set up a truecrypt volume on my usb key
where i put a portableapps suite adds some more of available usefull apps
now i'm testing it
and here's the problem:
many times i can't not remove my usb key
because is still in use
_for me is not_
so the only way is to took it out
but is not really the best solution i guess
i believe that someone other have already met this problem
and hopefully the solution
does anybody have some idea where i can found it?
i tried to search on this forum (remove key) but nothing really appeared
thanks in advance

this app will show you what's got files open

This is useful sometimes http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/opened_files_view.html

Also, is your key formatted NTFS or FAT? Is your TC volume formatted NTFS or FAT? Is it TC that will not dismount, or is that OK, but then your drive won't eject?

Normally TrueCrypt (as well

Normally TrueCrypt (as well as all other on the fly encryption) needs administrator rights to use the system driver that does the encryption.

If you were able to mount a TrueCrypt container and the USB stick cannot be removed its most likely caused by the TrueCrypt container still being mounted, thus using the USB drive on which the TrueCrypt container resides.

To safely remove the USB stick you need to dismount the TrueCrypt container first. The your USB drive will not be in use anymore (if you're not running other apps from the drive at moment of dismounting)

make sure that you exit TrueCrypt after it, too

or the driver itself may still be running, and keeping the .sys file open from the drive

Actually, the system driver

Actually, the system driver (.sys) is loaded into memory. After dismounting you need to exit the truecrypt.exe of cource. (When using command line through batch I believe this is automatic).

You could go down a

You could go down a checklist of your own: data saved and documents closed, all programs closed and not running any more, Truecrypt volume(s) dismounted. If you are sure those have been complete, and the light on your drive isn't flashing, it's most likely safe to pull it out.

If you really want to know what is keeping it "in use", there are several utilities. In addition to the one mentioned, TaskManager might help, but ProcessExplorer from Microsoft Sysinternals is even better. It takes some detective work, so it isn't just a matter of clicking on "which one". Each tool has its own strengths.

I find that Windows Explorer and antivirus software are frequently culprits for keeping files open when there is no good reason.
