Development Test Improvements Reference

As I try to help out new developers with some small improvements to get there portable application conformed perfectly to the latest PortableApps.com Format specifications (as far as I know them), I find it's getting repetitive to retype everything for all the users.

Below is a list of some small improvements I usually mention alongside any bugs, etc. I'll use this as a reference sheet to point new developers too, and new developers should also be checking these items before posting a development test.

  1. Your appicon.ico should include 16, 32, and 48 dimensions of both the 8 bit (256 Colors) format, and the 32 bit (XP).
  2. Add an AppInfo.ini from a new release of an portable app to 'AppNamePortable\App\AppInfo', edit it accordingly.
  3. Don't forget to add your copyright below Johns in the source file and Readme.txt.
  4. The version entry in the source is for the launcher which is currently at about 1.5.5.0.

More and more to come.

Good Post!

I look forward to seeing more.

One question.. why #1? Is there a reason other than most of the existing apps are done that way? (note I say most.. 7-Zip Portable, the most frequently advised 'template' app, is not done that way for instance). Assuming there isn't a better reason, I choose not to mix case Smile

Lol Yea

I don't like the lowercase either, I just go with what I see, the go caps, they go low, and back again. But I can remove it and we'll all be happy with capitals. Smile

What are good examples of

What are good examples of launchers to "borrow" from?

I think SumatraPDF claims to be at 1.5.5.0. FileZilla claims 1.5.6.0.

Each launcher solves different problems, so two launchers at 1.5.5.0 might still have some different structures. So it might be good to have a few different examples of launchers at the same release level to see what each has in common, and try to figure out how they changed from the previous release level.

Yea

I'll add that in, too. 7-Zip is fantastic for just registry (and you can add some additional file handling), and Sumatra is pretty good for regular files, and updating drive letters.
