Sounds like a pretty generic crash

First thing I would do is verify the installation, Check the MD5 of the installer and try reinstalling. Then I would try taking the portable to another computer to see if maybe some AV, firewall, or other misbehaved software is causing the crash.

A little confused.

Sorry to say this, but I'm a little confused about what the MD5 is, I've never done programming before, except for HTML. I'm also new to Pidgin, but have once tried Pidgin in an earlier version and it did a similar thing, then I installed the latest one before putting m post on here and it does it.

I will take it to another computer, thanks for mentioning that. I'll try it on my Mum's one and if it doesn't work on her computer (which is the same build as mine with exactly the same things. If it does (Mum's got exactly the same AV and Anti-Spyware programs on her computer as mine does, so I'll try it at my Grandparents' when I go over on Wednesday. I use AVE AntiVirus Free Edition (same as Mum, and my Aunt and her family), but have had no problems with it, it never detected anything bad when I installed every PortableApps.com program I had back onto my USB thumb drive.

That MD5 of the installer you mention is a bit confusing for me. As I said, I am new to Pidgin (but have use PortableApps since August 07. I think I might tell you what my system has, I forgot to mention it in my post above. It is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66GHz
2.68 GHz, 248 MB of RAM.

The above was taken straight from my System Properties dialogue box. I don't know if that would be of any help. If you could help me out with the MD5 of the installer, I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks so much for trying to help me out. I am just a bit confused that's all.

MD5s are like a fingerprint

Basically, MD5 is a kind of checksum of a program. It allows you to quickly check if a download has been corrupted (or tampered with).

The MD5 for the installer can be found at the bottom of it's page https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/pidgin_portable - there is a line there that reads
MD5 Hash (for the geeks): ecf27f9ff500abd0cbfe6e2f94f2fe67
which tells you the fingerprint of the file as it was originally created by the developer.

You can then get a program such as https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/winmd5sum_portable which can calculate the MD5 sum for the actual downloaded file that you have, to check that it hasn't become corrupted. the string of numbers and letters should be identical (case doesn't matter).

Basically, checking that allows us to be certain that the installer that you ran wasn't corrupted.

I hope that's clear Smile

Trying it on another computer is definitely a good idea, too.... let us know how it goes.

On top of the above

On top of the above mentioned steps, try installing a local install of Pidgin and see if you still encounter the error. That will at least tell us whether or not it lies within the portablization or the actual program itself.

I've tried :-(

I tried installing the local version of Pidgin and the same thing keeps happening to me. I have a feeling that Pidgin, whether local or portable, and GIMP, whether local or portable, keep playing up on me. Does anyone know if the GTK is behind it? If that is the case, I think I should stay away from programs that require GTK.

I've got no idea whether you need the MD5 number for the setup file or the program file on my portable drive, so I'll give you both, which are below. I can't understand what they mean, so I'll leave it up to anyone who may help.

Installation file MD5: ecf27f9ff500abd0cbfe6e2f94f2fe67
Program file MD5: dd24ad22dfa675049cea9ed16b7788eb

I haven't tried it on another computer yet. I doubt it'll work on my Mum's one because she has the same computer I have with all the same computer specs. I shall try it at my Aunt's house next time I go over there. If it works there, I guess I must need to have a totally newer computer to run Pidgin Portable. Re-installing doesn't help either.

I hope that may help anyone who can help me! Thanks again for your wonderful help!

GTK

As Ryan said in the other thread, its most likely GTK. The installation file md5 you posted matches the one on the Pidgin page and the program file md5 matches mine so that shows us/you that you have uncorrupted files.
Pidgin includes its own GTK so its weird that it doesn't work and most likely its the right version because otherwise it wouldn't be included in the package :).
As it happens with the installed version, you might be out of luck. Maybe you can find help at the pidgin forums as someone else might have the same problem...?
