GIMP 2.4.4 and Win2000?

http://www.gimp.org/features/ says:

Supported Platforms
* Linux (i386, PPC)
* Microsoft Windows (XP, Vista)
* Mac OS X
* Sun OpenSolaris
* FreeBSD

Other pages on the gimp.org site claim Win2000 compatibility, so I don't know whether Win2000 is supposed to work or not. Has anyone been able to run GIMP 2.4.4 (either standard or portable) on Win2000? Mine crashes while trying to load image files.

In my brief tests, it still worked for me on Windows 2000 (fully patched) just running it from the Desktop. Started up, new image, save, open. It does crash on exit more frequently on Win2K, though.

My guess is that GIMP no longer supports Win2K as a platform but should still mostly run correctly.

Try an existing JPG file

Have you tried opening an existing JPG file in Win2K? That's what was crashing for me; it put up a dialog box saying that the JPEG import module had crashed, and that I should close and restart GIMP because that module may have corrupted other parts of the program.

Also works for me. Opened up the splash screen from 7-Zip Portable (in the Other\Source directory) just fine.

Win2K

OK, I'll keep trying. The MD5sum was correct, so it wasn't a bad download; there may be something else screwy with my system. Thanks.

My observations ...

My observations are consistent. Have been running 2.4+ (and beta versions) installed on a couple w2k machines. Occasional "crash" on exit. On the xp machine, I cannot remember any crashes. Haven't has a lot of experience with the official portable version, but will use it more now.

I have Windows2000

As I noticed that trying to Load an image in GIMP (this new version) would crash the program I just did a clean install on a flash drive and after loading (and crashing) I saved the Dr Watson error files. Here they be:

If anyone wants to decipher it they are more than welcome.

I have found that if I make a NEW image and then open an existing image there's no crashing. Although I prefer to use WinOpen than the GIMP window. Of course this is only available once an image exists.

i just want to make it clear

i just want to make it clear that the crashing happens in the default GIMP Load window only.

the plugin WinLoad is the Only way to load any images into GIMP right now (for Windows2000 users).

even after I have an image open If I use the default loader the program crashes.
