I only use OOo

but I need the calc part sometimes so that's why. But if you only need a word processor, then Abiword is a lot smaller and does a good job.

I tried AbiWord before I got

I tried AbiWord before I got OOo for Calc, and as you can't just have Calc, you get all the other OOo apps, my question is - is there any reason to keep AbiWord?

Yes

One reason for me would be : Space.
Abiword is 17mb installed whereas OOo is 220mb. So If you have a smaller flash drive, Abiword might be the only way to go. On the other hand flash drives keep getting cheaper and smaller...
And with an average of 500 downloads a day I think there are people who like it.

But you are not answering my question Smile - what do people use AbiWord for if they have OOo installed (and therefore have Writer)

AbiWord Grammer but incomplete ODT support

Reason TO have Abi?

OOo doesn't (yet) have a grammar checker. So I'd toss a draft into Abi just for a look-see. Now, the Abi site and this site says Abi has a grammar checker, but I've never found it. And they're probably not the best work habit, anyway.

Reason NOT to use Abi?

Their web site has a page that says they don't support the complete ODF (.odt) standard. So, some things you do in OOo might not show up at all when viewed in AbiWord, or might be altered. I was lucky enough to see items in frames moved and others just completely missing -- usually your recipient only thinks you are sloppy or worse. As for from Abi to OOo, or if Abi edits your file and returns it, I have no idea.

But unless you need to pass a editable file around, I guess the better lesson is "send a pdf."
