Then hurry on with it Oh

Then hurry on with it Biggrin

Oh btw John, please make links open in a new window. Im sure you love all those pageviews from people pressing the back button, but to often I accidentally close the tab/window. Good practice is to open external links in a new window.

Uhhh ... that's a new one on

Uhhh ... that's a new one on me. Opening in a new window (especially without warning) breaks the "back" function, which is one of those things people rely on.

Maybe you are hanging out in sites that haven't heard about that?

Thats a new one for me Smile But it really boosts the page views of a page doesn't it?

No and No

The opening a new window thing isn't new. It's a horrible usability issue. Users expect a link to take them to a new page and to be able to click back to go back. Period. New windows are a bad idea except for very specific situations.

And it doesn't boost page views at all. Clicking back loads a page from the browser's cache.

It's a usability thing. Search around a bit and you'll find actual reports using real live testing that prove it.

Maybe so

But its also redirecting users away from your site while they might have spend more time on the site.

The practice of opening a new page is same window might be ok when the links are under the control of the website, but 99% of all forums use a new window just because they are not under control of the webmaster(s).

And whether of not opening a new window is a horrible usability issue is very subjective. I don't think users expect either way.

About not adding a new page view, well maybe not much, but still. Some people do have settings to reload page every time they visit. (Because, say, they are web disigners). And there's also a 'time spend on page' thing Smile

I often find myself loosing a page because I hyper linked a few times.

Still it's a personal opinion and there is no real good or bad. Period Smile

Let The User Decide

Well, as every usability study I've read has recommended, I'm going to continue to let the user decide. Everyone is welcome to middle-click or right-click and open any link they want in a new window. If you'd like to click a link on a website and have it open a new window, knock yourself out. Smile But I won't be forcing them to.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Why not do it yourself?

just add target=_blank into your tags. For examplethis link to the forums opens in a new window.

Insert original signature here with Greasemonkey Script.
