PortableApps.com Update (Week of Feb 25, 2008)

New update here:
https://portableapps.com/node/11960

Howdy all and welcome to another exciting PortableApps.com Update. I know this is falling a little late in the week, so it's really more of a week summary rather than a what's coming, but at least it's here. And they ran out of punch and pie at the store, so there's cookies and Fresca in the back today.

Updating Current Portable Apps (FINALLY COMPLETED!!)

The majority of the effort this week went into updating all of the currently released apps to the latest version of the app and to the current PortableApps.com Format with the latest installer. Just this week, we had VLC Media Player 0.8.6e, Pidgin 2.4.0, Miranda IM 0.7.3, Toucan 1.2.1.1, PuTTY 0.60 Rv 2, Notepad++ 4.8, Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.12, Audacity Portable 1.2.6 Rv 3, MPlayer Portable 1.0 RC2, Eraser 5.82 Rv 3, winMd5Sum 1.0.1.55 Rv 2, Command Prompt 1.1 and Mines-Perfect 1.4 Rv 3.

It took a lot more work than expected and we had a few apps update in the middle of the process. But it's done now, so we should be back on the ball.

New 24 Hour Turnaround Goal

From now on, we'll be working to hit a 24 hour turnaround time for new app updates. So, if FileZilla turns out a new version at 4pm on Monday, we'd shoot for having the portable version out by the same time on Tuesday. I'll be introducing an app status page for folks to be able to post notes if we miss something (which is possible as some apps don't do notifications via email or RSS).

More Formalized Beta Testing

We're looking to get a team of people together to beta test apps. There's a discussion about how it will work and who will be involved over in the Beta Testing Team thread.

Development Test Apps Start Releasing Next Week

We'll be starting the release of the new apps that are posted as development tests next week. If your app is ready to go, please post it in this new ready apps thread so we can keep track of them all in one place.

Additional Platform Developers

Two of our three new platform developers are on board and will begin contributing once the code is in SVN. We'll be having some directional discussions about the platform itself as well. Stay tuned.

PAF Spec / Platform

The PortableApps.com Spec and the Platform update have taken a backseat to the app updates for the past couple weeks, but now that this is finally done, there will be posting about this next week.

SourceForge.net Top 5

As mentioned last week, we're now in the Top 5 on SourceForge.net. We've actually settled into #3 at the moment. We'll probably move up and down by 1 or 2 each week, but I think we'll be solidly in the top 5 for good now Smile

That's it for now. More to come. Have a great weekend everybody.

Regards,
John

Fantastic

First, let me say I am extremely impressed with the releases this week. It's clear you were very dedicated, and spent a large amount of time working to get everything updated. Just curious, you say you're completed... did you forget Sudoku, is it coming, or being dropped for whatever reason?

As for the 24 hour turnaround, that's awesome! It might be a good idea, that if there's an app update you think doesn't need any adjustments, to set some other people up to update, compile, upload and release it to make things easier for you. Also, an area for posting updates a great idea. I was going to ask you how to managed releases that weren't from SourceForge feeds, other feeds, or developer updates.

Totally pumped to have one of my applications released.

Great to see more developers being added to the platform, it's good to see you take some load off yourself and let others help, too. As well, I can't wait to see the formalized format specifications.

Again, thank you.

Overworked?

I'm certainly impressed with the number of updates there's been this week, but has this really overworked you to the point where you can't even remember what year it is Biggrin ?

Fantastic News!

I'm so very impressed by the amount of apps you released each day during the week. You said you'd do an app a day, I'm very pleased to see that you've done more than one! I can hardly wait for the new PortableApps.com menu to be released...It's going to be so good! I've only just downloaded the latest updates for Pidgin and VLC, but will install them when I get a chance.

Thanks again, John, for such great PortableApps! Hope to see more great apps soon!

Congrats on the releases

Congrats on the releases this week.

Does the Portable Apps specs change so much that it would make it incompatible with the current specs, or are they already moved toward. And do really post them withing a week this time, that would be great!

Good to hear that finally after all this time more developers will join on board and I really hope you will publish a beta of the new menu EARLY and don't sit on the code for another six months. I also hope you will take input from them on additions and improvements. Please consider pascal scripting as plugin environment. This way plugins can be written by all people, even if they don't have Delphi.

For checking for updates I use a firefox plugin "wfx_versions". It takes the update info right from the html pages. (I already use it for the geek menu updates succesfully). A nce way to keep up-to-date for projects without announcements.

Keep the Beta testing open and public on the forums. This will increase the tracking down of issues and keeps everyone involved. You could 'ping' the group of betatesters through email or something but keep the actual beta test threads public!

And what about a new beta PortableApps project on sourceforge where beta developers can join together and have their betas posted for download. This will make a central place for downloads and overview of the betas. When they are good enough the apps can be moved to the main PA project.

Congrats on the top 5 position at Sourceforge. It's a great thing considering the many projects there.

Cheers!

Of Course

Of course the beta testing forum will remain public. The only purpose of the beta testing team is to be a team of people that have agreed to dedicate there time to testing specific areas of an application.

Keep up the good work.

I appreciate all the work you've done to update all the apps.

I'm looking forward to all the new apps (both yours and other developer's) that are going to be released down the road, and also what's to come with the platform itself.

Installation

The only problem now is making it easier to install new versions of apps. Maybe some sort of Firefox-like auto update built into PA or something...
