OK got the apps back. The autorun.inf thread was useful but I think what worked was that I managed to retrace my steps and find where I'd gone wrong, as when I first installed Suite, it worked OK. I had moved the PortableAppsMenu app from its folder to the root directory on the external drive (an iPod), so I could open it all the quicker. That didn't work, restoring to where it should be did.
There is a very small amount of flexibility in naming the main parts of the suite. If you just leave things the way they install, it works okay. Once you move one thing relative to another, as you found, things can get iffy.
You can leave the StartPortableApps.exe program in the root. You do have that, right?
