HTTP File Server 2.3 beta Portable Dev Test 3

Application: HFS

Category: Internet

About: HFS (Http File Server) is a simple, standalone web server designed for file sharing.

Link: Download Date: 2008-03-28 MD5: b806b08e1eb2cfa6ea09202f8dab6f05

License: GPL

Notes:

  • I haven't been able to get AdjustPaths to work on the binary file in which the VFS (virtual file system) is stored. So for now, if the drive letter changes, the VFS may need to be recreated manually -- although it looks like the program does store relative paths on removable drives.
  • Windows Firewall, or other firewalls, may need to have their settings changed, which may require Admin privileges.
  • Making the server work through a NAT router/firewall may not be trivial, especially when traveling.

2008-03-28 Dev Test 3: cleaned up, tightened up some of the magic. The filename says 2.2d, but the enclosed file is 2.3 beta. They do seem to be interchangeable. Please report whether you would recommend the "release" versus a stable "beta" should be in this package.

Actually, there's some stuff...

So, here's some notes that you might want to fix.

  • HFS automaticly detects whether you're on a removable device or not, so it makes relative paths if the file in the VFS is on the portable device, the path will be relative.
  • You haven't added your copyright to the two *.nsi files.
  • The readme is from PngOptimizer, perhaps you should make one for HFS?
  • The folder name / shortname should be HFSPortable, and not HfsPortable.
  • There's two splash images in the /Other/ folder, one is enough Smile

I understand that you've chosen 2.2d, but the latest beta is rather stable and a lot more featured. Anyway, it's not a problem to remove 2.2d and use the 2.3 instead.

Anyway, some fixing required, but it works.

rab040ma, you are doing a

rab040ma, you are doing a great job on all of your apps, however, the one issue i've noticed is that you leave a lot of unneeded files in the other/source directory. please only include the needed files, it will reduce file size by quite a bit.

templates

ok....so I want to change the template for the html, but I can't seem to figure out where in the portable apps directory structure the new template should go. Any ideas? So far all I get is junk.

Switch from "Easy" to "Expert" mode and there will be a menu choice for edit template.

Did you try the

Did you try the instructions?

If they do not work, you should probably ask on that web site how to make them work.

Arleady Portable?

Why wouldn't you just Change where HFS stores its data instead of making it portable this way. It was already portable Or at-least I believe it is. Open the menu and go to "save options" click "to file"

well.....

Its easier for the data to be saved to the registry instead of saving a file. Plus its faster to do it that way, all u do is exit and it saves it to it. I think HFS only stores to the registry so it would be easier to have the registry backed up before deleted.

If you assume that only

If you assume that only geeks will want to do something like this, then yes, it is already portable ... IF you select "to file" and IF you put your shared directory on the USB stick and IF you choose settings that make sense when you are on the road.

Just because it is portable does not mean it will integrate well into the Portable Apps Suite, nor does it mean that it defaults to settings that are easy for people to use in a portable way.

The launcher/installer and default options are attempting to set things up so the starting point is settings that are fairly ok for a portable app, and then to make sure the settings are preserved and backed up automatically by the backup routine. Yes, you can do all those things manually, but why would you want to if the launcher can do it for you? Blum

I've cleaned up the package,

I've cleaned up the package, tweaked the first run magic, and posted test 3. Please try it out and see if I've responded to the comments adequately.

Rise from your grave!

I never realized this program was open source. Did the licence change? This would be a worthy inclusion to the PortableApps stable IMHO.

We Have a Volunteer!

I figured as much. Fortunately, the awesomeness of this little program isn't tied to the presence of abscence of rab040ma. Smile

Thanks for the info.

The other thing is that as

The other thing is that as near as I can tell, the development on the apps itself has been stalled.
