Ultralight Laptops

I was wondering if anyone has any of those tiny laptops that run on winxp, like QDO and thier ilk. Has anyone used the portable apps on them? I would presume that they work the same as it would on normal PCs. Screen size would seem to be my only concern.

There have been several

There have been several folks with the eee pc (I think that's what it is called) that have reported problems with the larger menu skin, but I think they have found one or another mod to do the job. (I don't know, is eee like qdo?)

As long as the ultralight runs Windows, and not something else like Windows CE or Mac OS or Linux, there shouldn't be a problem, except for maybe the occasional app that thinks it has to have 1024x768 to operate.

I have one of the eeepcs and

I have one of the eeepcs and portable apps worked the one time I tried it. The eee is a linux based unit thus far though comes with xp in some countries. Here it is thus far linux but you can install xp on it with an external dvd drive.

There are some that have worked with it, you might search eeeuser.com forum. This is a very active forum for the eee. To see the unit go to asus.com and search for the EEE if it isn't on the first page.

It is a celeron 900 mhz (clocked down to 600 or so to keep heat and battery drain down, with 512 ram and either 2,4, or 8 meg of solid state hard drive. It is a seven inch (measured horizontally) screen with a useable keyboard though it is small. Sells for 299 to 599 depending on drive size/features.

They are coming out with an 8.9 inch screen very soon.

HP is coming out with a mini and there are several others that should be out in a few months.

Personally love the unit though the keyboard is a slight frustration but workable. Better than the wince unit I've used for years Smile

I also have an eee

I also have an eee (Pearl White 4GB 701, to be specific) configured to use 'Advanced' Mode (KDE-single user) on the delivered version of Linux. I regularly use an external USB hard drive with the R31 Menu version and a number of apps under wine. I do use the delivered Linux apps for web browsing and IM and don't use an email client, so my experience my be different from yours. Most apps work fine on the machine, but if you would like me to try some in particular, I'll give it a shot! I have most of the ones hosted here already as I am using a 160gb drive.
