Release Notes:
Due to the base program been freeware the launcher is only posted here. You will be required to download the main file and extract the Wink folder into the WinkPortable/App file set.
I received permission from Satish previously to create this. The correspondance can be found in the Other/Source folder.
Development Test 2 (2008-03-09):
- updated readme.txt
- defaulted fade in to 0
- added appsource.txt
Development Test 1 (2008-03-07):
- initial release
I've been looking for exactly something like this, I will D/L it when I get home and test it out for you. I'm trying to teach someone 500 miles away how to use Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop, and it's just really hard without visual aides.
Ever considered to contact the author and get permission or have the author make a portable compliant version?
I contacted Satish in 2006 of the top of my head regarding making a portable version. He was happy for me to go ahead myself and they even linked to this site in the forum for users requesting a portable version etc. It would be easier if Satish had made it open source. But that is his choice. All been well when the site here can go ahead with freeware postings I can then offer the full version here. Until then it will have to remain the launcher only.

You could always make a complete paf.exe and send it to him to host it. That would be completely legal I think.
Way to go!
(PS. I have a wink portable already on my flash, some old beta that was floating around. It included the app itself if i remember correctly)
Yes I released a Beta that was available from my site that had it included.
I will get in touch with Satish again regarding him hosting a full paf version himself. But first I will check with John that is ok with him. Obviously it will not be linked here until the freeware aspect is sorted out.

I just suggest contacting the developer. Then in theory there should not be any legal issues. Werther john allows it to be linked from the forum it his own choice.
I think the Freeware aspect is John putting third party releases between ordinary releases and hosting the apps himself. From the right to re-distribute to the right to add the launcher in this case. But it's not that John would mind if a genuine developer would host a Portable App of his own making on his own side unless John would start claiming the original developer is now allowed to because, for example, the launcher or installer contains parts copyrighted by John and therefore he wants the application to be removed.
And if the 'freeware' aspect is ever going to be sorted... It's not that John will start to claim ownership of the Freeware application.
So I think it should be okay to have the original developer to have his own application as a portable application no matter what John allows on this site. And if John really wants to disallow other publishers to make their own Portable Apps for whatever reason this should not be an Open Source project at all.
I think the freeware aspect of PortableApps.com is just implementing a structure of differentiating between Open Source apps and freeware apps. John is fairly tightlipped about what his ideas are about freeware support anyway. For all I know it could very well be he wants also the rights to put in into deals with Flash Drive manufacturers which I would have mixed feelings about. It never can be someone makes a freeware app, gives you the rights to make a portable version and some site decides to make some money from the freeware application.
If John doesn't want the freeware apps even linked from the forum, there are enough websites around who don't have any problem with that, including the developer of the freeware application itself.
So bottom line is, just ask the developer to host a full version of the app compatible with the PortableApps.com format and let John tke it from there. If he doesn't like it, he can even remove the link from the forum. This stands apart from the "hosting it on PortableApps.com" and "Listing it in the list of official PortableApps.com applications". But that's just my opinion...
I have amended the issues raised by Patrick that were in CamStudio Portable in this Launcher also.

Just a quick heads up ....
I had seen a couple of problems with SAS wrongly reporting [and blocking] the latest WP as an adware trojan; I reported this last week to the SAS support team and they've tested WP in the labs and, as of about 4 hours ago, modified their anti-spyware signatures accordingly.
Anyone currently using SAS should make sure that they update their sigs asap.

Hello,
After having followed the recommended steps, is there any reason why wink still wants to access my registry or am I omitting something. (I wish to install it on my laptop on which I have no admin privileges)
thx for your assistance
cheers,
JH
some of the apps on PortableApps need access to the registry in order to write the user's personal settings.
We don't modify the base applications at all, so if the base app stores it's settings in the registry, our wrapper for the base app will backup the local registry settings for that app (if they exist), move the portable settings into place in the registry, launch the application, and then on close of the app, the launcher will save the portable settings back to the flash drive and restore the local settings.
These apps don't claim to not touch the registry, they claim to leave no personal data behind and keep local settings unchanged.

As Zach has kindly explained, it is a harmless action required for the application to run that is tidied up upon proper closing of the portable version.

Has development been interrupted, or the file removed for some reason? The file cannot be downloaded (page not found). If you right-click and attempt to save file that way, you get 2kb "ghost" only.
Found it...oddly enough here: http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-Portable-Applications-Wink...
I am currently only supporting Blender until I have more time.

Any chance of someone picking this up?

I am presuming the requirement is to uniextract the files from the exe. But then where exactly do I put the files? Which winkportable subfolder? I can't get this to work without more precise directions. Thanks for any help.
I'll try to be as precise as possible.
1) Download this Launcher-only package from Softpedia (direct download link), since the original link is down.
Optional: confirm that the MD5 matches the one in the OP
2) Install it to where you want, most likely:
X:\PortableApps\WinkPortable
3) Grab the Wink from their website (direct download link), the downloaded file should be
wink20-1060.zip
4) Extract the ZIP file. The extracted file (
wink20.exe
) is the Wink installer which OP mentions, and from which you have to extract the actual Wink.5) Using 7-Zip, extract
wink20.exe
to a directory of your choice (lets call itEXTRACT
).6) Copy everything from within
EXTRACT\$R0
folder intoX:\PortableApps\WinkPortable\App\Wink
folder. And that's it. I hope this was precise enough for you
Disclaimer: I'm not the developer of this program, and therefore I assume no guaranties that it will work, nor be portable. I've only provided you with the step-by-step process on how to set it up. I have done some basic checks, and it seems this program is working portably. However, I've only done these tests on 1 machine and they can't be considered neither comprehensive, nor valid.
You're quite welcome
Cheers
My posts are old and likely no longer relevant.
... that's actually exactly what I did the second time I tried just before I posted here. I will try it again following your directions just in case it's me [more than likely] and not an issue with version release or something cosmic.
Thanks and Regards

I have followed your instructions precisely and now have it working perfectly on my XP machine. The only thing I know I did differently previously was to extract using uniextract instead of 7-zip which I can't imagine would make any difference. I must have done something I don't remember to foul up my original effort.
Thanks again.
