Will work... Reinsert your

Will work...
Reinsert your flashdrive, reboot your computer, tell windows to delete old icons from memory using TweakUI, etc.

Let's see, what could keep

Let's see, what could keep that from working:

  • The icon is the wrong format or resolution
  • You didn't reboot the computer
  • The path you entered is inaccurate
  • You included a web link in your signature

Well, that last one is not why it didn't work, but the forum standard is to put your blog or homepage in the homepage field, and not in your signature.

Other than that, if you have a good icon file and entered the path properly (for example, didn't add spaces) and rebooted your computer, you are looking at the correct icon; if not, there was a slip betwixt brain and file.

You are changing the icon for the drive, rather than the icon for a folder? That's a different story.

You should only have to

You should only have to reboot for the change to be visible immediately after you make the change, not on each PC you visit.

that part isnt required.

that part isnt required. but TweakUI is a downloadable tool that allows you to customize some rather hidden aspects of Windows.

you could also...

you could also try creating an icon in gimp saving it with a 30x30 size, then select all files instead of all image files and ad the .ico extention to the end of the name for your icon. then place the icon in the same directory that is listed in the autorun.inf file and rename either the icon to match the .inf file and delete the PAM logo, or rename the file in the autorun.inf file to match that of your new icon. then remove flash drive, reboot and reinsert the flashdrive.

as you can see here, i changed my PAM logo to the vista orb. what i did was took a pic of the vista orb, added transparency, and then shrunk it to 32 x 32 pixels. i then saved it as all files, PortableAppsMenu.ico and saved it in the same directory as the menu's .exe. after that i opened the autorun.inf file and changed the icon from PortableAppsMenu.exe to PortableAppsMenu.ico since they were in the same directory, that was all that was needed. then i logged out and loged back in and what you see in the picture is what you get.

EUREKA!!!

ok..i made it work..but heres the strange part...i didn't use 32 x 32 icon...instead i used a 16 x 16 icon...then i didnt even reboot...i just unplugged and plugged it back..the icon appeared!!...so my theory is ..my thumbdrive is a different kind...perhaps..im using sandisk cruzer micro 1gb ..but that doesnt make sense...its just brand...so now i know why i couldnt put icon on my thumbdrive....because 32 x 32 wasnt suitable for me...16 was...hah...

You can put several

You can put several different sizes and resolutions inside an ICO file. Windows picks the one that is best depending on the circumstance. It can use a different one depending on whether Explorer displays Tiles versus a List. If you plug your USB drive into an older or newer machine, it might choose a different resolution image contained in the ICO file than the one it displays on your home machine. (Of course, if you are happy with the 16x16 icon, this information is irrelevant.)

glad to hear it! tis method works for replacing the folder icons that are displayed in windows explorer like the documents folder too! so if you want to change your folder icon on your flash drive, just replace the current icon in the folder icon's part of your PAM menu folder. this also works for only 24 x 24 size icons if you want to change the ones displayed inside of the menu itself. after i changed my drive icon yesterday i ws inspired to change all of my icons and revamp my PAM to look like vista but my style and all of the icons are great so you may want to change thoes as well.

**Note** when changing the foler icons tha show up in explorer, it may take a while for it to take effect, it took a few hours and a lot of fustration but now mine works.

i looked up "Vista Icons" and got a full single picture layout and croped all of the different folder icons to fit the PAM. the only downside is that it takes a while for the folders to change over to the new icons in explorer. i also just remembered that if you accedentally name your folder icon somehing else, go inside the folder that you are changing the icon of, I.e. the "Documents, Pictures ect..." and just edit "Desktop.ini" to use your icon.

Flash drive icon

It is possible and very easy to create your own icons for anything, including your flash drive. Just alter the .inf file on the flash drive itself. Load the .ico file of your choice onto the drive, then rename the file location in the .inf file on the flash drive to match the icon name and location in your drive. Here are several examples of the new icons.
Document folder icons
My Comp with original icon
INF file
USB icon
Autoplay
Now with new icon

Signature automatically removed for containing links
