Is there any way to play realmedia files on a pc that I can't install codecs on? Size isn't an issue. I searched through the forum and have the unfortunate feeling that there isn't...

I use portable VLC for media.. unfortunately no dice on it running Real Media. bobstennet talks about "Fastone Player" here: https://portableapps.com/node/760#comment-3432 and says it runs Real but I have no experience with it.
I assume he means "FastStone Player"? If so, I just tried it and it gave me an error message saying you need Realplayer installed.
Do a search for RealAlternative on Google

Thanks for the suggestion but I can't install that either. I'm looking for a portable media player that can play realmedia. Someone said they were looking into making RealAlternative portable--was there any success?
I don't know anything about portable RealAlternative, but you might try the portable version of Fusion Media Player... it supports several formats, DivX among them. Don't know if it supports RealMedia.
What do you need Real codecs for?

Looks like Fusion doesn't support RealMedia.
I need the codecs to watch a video file at work during my lunch break (i.e. I can't install anything on the computer).
Hmm...
On your home computer you could convert it from RealMedia to DivX format, using one of many apps out on the net... Worth a try?
Good luck!

Was this on a system with RealPlayer installed?
If you have enough time on your hands, you could convert it from a RealPlayer file to a file Fusion Media Player could run.

I tried converting a file to .avi a little while ago (can't remember from which format) and the quality was just awful. Does converting to DIVX generally work better? I'll try that next time, thanks for the advice :-).
Player that can play RealMedia files without codecs installed is Kliper. It's basically front end for Mplayer and has quite good set of options.

It comes with installer, but is possible to make it portable very easy. Compressed with UPX it takes about 10MB and combined with VLC you can play almost every video format available without installing a single codec.
Although I haven't tried it as a portable application, you might want to take a look at Real Alternative.

It is all but portable because it installs RealMedia codec on host computer and then just uses Media Player Classic for playing Real Media stuff.
I chose not to install MediaPlayer Classic and it just used WiMP to play rmvb files.
