Hello, I'm IIVQ and I'm just new to the portableApps forum.
At first, I wanted to say I love the programs on this site and the idea behind it. I just wonder ... was I the one who started it all?
In the changelog of PortableGaim I see that the first version was released in nov '05. Yet, in May '05 I already posted a small manual on how to create a MobileGaim (as I called it) - there was no information on how to do this before. I wonder - did the PortableGaim creators use this as inspiration? (P.S. MobileGaim works about the same as PortableGaim, PG just has a nicer installer and starter - MG worked fine for me until I installed PG yesterday).
Second, let me know you what's on my "stick".
I just bought an 8GB Lacie Carte Orange which I store in my wallet (it's credit-card sized).
Currently I have the following software on it:
Listed on PortableApps:
- Pstart
- Portable OpenOffice
- Portable Gaim
Not listed on PA, but I think (haven't tested yet) they're 95-100% portable (after installation)
- SciTE (Text editor with syntax highlighting)
- OpenTTD (Game)
- Inkscape (vector graphics)
- 7-zip
- VLC (Video Lan Client, videoplayer)
- Process Explorer
- Rootkit Revealer
- Putty (ssh)
- Various Security software and installers (such as McAfee Enterprise Installer, winsock xp fix, Blaster/Sasser patces, Stinger, Spybot S&D and Adaware Installers - I use these all at my work which has licenses for the products that require them)
- Spybot S&D which runs from and updates to stick (doesn't leave the host computer as is, off course)
Software that needs some work to get to work standalone but should/could work
- GIMP (needed an "ugly" GTK copy to dir - it would be nicer if PortableGaim and Gimp could use the same GTK base - a solution to this is starting from the GTK dir as I did with MobileGaim - a better solution would be to have te developers include a "GTK_LOCATION" envvar or --gtk-location startup option)
- Eclipse (it's java - so standalone, but it needs the host systems' JRE - I need a solution to this.)
Wishes:
- A good SFTP program
- A simple image viewer - maybe irfanview will work
- bookmark software - I prefer IE to portable FF so I want something to store bookmarks in (and more sophisticated than a HTML file)

As far as SFTP, Portable FileZilla (which is plain FileZilla with a fancy launcher, settings backups, and compressed files) supports ftps, sftp, ftp, and a few other varieties (it's partially based on Putty).
Image viewer... It might be possible to make Windows' Picture and Fax viewer portable if you like it -- though it's rather ubiquitous.
As for bookmark software, I don't have any ideas... why do you prefer IE to portable FF? I might be able to code a launcher that uses your Favorites folder from the USB drive, if you'd find that useful.
You might be interested to know that instructions for making Gaim portable have been on their website since before JH's PortableGaim. (I think so, anyway.)
