FireFox3 Beta 5 Portable "Stuttering"

Is anyone else experiencing what I can best describe as 'stuttering' or 'jerkiness' when using FF3B5P?

It appears to happen mostly 2-3 seconds after opening or reloading a page, and the entire FF browser hangs for 3-5 seconds. Then it comes back up and everything is OK and it continues to run fine, until the next time it stutters.

I suspect this has something to do with disk writes. I've been watching my thumbdrive's LED and FF3 appears to beat on my drive hard.

I have not run any of the previous releases of 3 so I am not sure if this behavior is new to B5 or not.

9 out of 10 chance...

...your drive is slow.

The default options in FFP aren't very friendly to slow drives. Best thing you can do is disable history, form saving, password saving... anything that would cause FF to write to your profile at page load. The worst one, the disk cache, has already been disabled, but all the other stuff adds up too on a slow drive.

Another big one is the session manager. If disabling history, form saving, etc. still gives you a poor experience, try disabling the session manager--but remember that if you do this, you won't be able to resume where you left off if FF crashes. To disable it, navigate to about:config, click the "Yeah I want to do this, stupid" button (it doesn't actually say that but it may as well) then type "session" into the "Filter" box. Double-click the setting "browser.sessionstore.enabled" to turn it off and restart Firefox.

It's possible my drive is

It's possible my drive is slow, but it's never been a problem with previous FF releases (or any other of the applications I run from my drive). I'm using a Sandisk Cruzer TI 4GB.

I'm not willing to disable history or form/password saving. If FF has degraded their performance to the level that that is the problem then I'm best off finding a new browser (assuming it doesn't get resolved before release). I did try turning off the session auto-restore, hopefully that will help. I'll know soon...

..

Yeah, I have a similar problem and FFP is running
from a HDD but I also have a whole bunch of hacked extensions
installed, I suspect it's one of them causing problems ..
