portable thunderbird update failure

Hello,

today, 29 of April 2008, I received a notification for an update and as usual I accepted. Since then, when I try to start my PT from the USB key I get this message:

"The Application of DLL E:\PrtableThunderbird\App\thunderbird\xpcom_core.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

To me, this message is incomprehensible... can anyone tell me how to restore Thunderbird without loosing all my e-mails?

Thank you for any suggestion and help!
Cheers

Reinstall

Just download the latest copy of Thunderbird portable and install it to your usb drive. It wont touch your data.

And by the way you shouldn't use the built-in auto updater right now because it will break a local installation and redirect all the registry entries for the local instance to your portable version. If there isn't a local version installed, it will create all of the standard firefox registry entries and point them to the portable version.

This is a known bug with the auto-update feature, has been discussed numerous times, and Mozilla is currently working on a fix.

didn't work :(

Does not work. I download the Thunderbird_Portable_2.0.0.12_en-us.paf.exe and then double click as instructed.
However this is the answer I get:

C:\\Documents and Settings\...\Desktop\Thunderbird_Portable_2.0.0.12_en-us.paf.exe is not a valid Win32 application.

The same if I copy and start it from my USB key.

What is wrong? I've got windows XP, could it be it?

Cheers

Check the MD5Sum

That is a way to verify if you have a corrupted file or not.
Download WinMd5Sum Portable and install it. Drag the Thunderbird installation file over it and compare the hash you get with the one on the Thunderbird download page. If they don't match you have a corrupted file and should download it again, maybe from a different mirror.

Another thing you could check is if you have file system errors on your hard drive.

And by the way it isn't good to start the installers from the Usb key as they copy a lot of files to the key. Now if you launch it from the key they copy the files from the key to the key and sometimes you get a corrupted install because the usb key cant handle so many reads and writes at a time.

Hope you get it to work Smile

Sounds like you might have....

right clicked on the download button and hit "save as"

That won't work - you'll just end up with a copy of the HTML of the sourceforge download page.

You need to left click on the button to get it.

Same Issue!

I am having the same .DLL error. I too accepted the update and now I can not access my email. When I try to update by just installing Thunderbird again The error I get is I need to remove Thunderbird and install again. I dont want to remove it because I will lose my data right? All my stuff is installed through the U3 launchpad. So even when I try to install using that by downloading, it doesnt see the install files because they are not the .u3p file type.
