Previous/Next message buttons don't work

Thunderbird has been working well. The only problem I have is the "go forward one message" and "go back one message" buttons don't work. Anyone have a suggestion?
Thanks,

Bill

Welcome

Bill,

Welcome to PortableApps.com Smile

What version of TBPortable are you using?
Are you using any Add-ons?
What version of Windows are you using?

Bill,

Bill,

You seem to have gotten version 2.0.0.14 almost immediately after John released it.

You are using ThunderBird Portable from this site right?
Is this a fresh install or did you upgrade your previous version?

If upgrade, what version did you have before?
Were you having problems with that version?
Did you allow it to auto/selfupdate or did you download it from this site and upgrade over the previous version?

"Previous/Next message buttons"
We need to clarify which buttons you mean.

Do you mean "Back" and "Forward"?
Which takes you back and forth between messages you have "recently read" in this session
[i.e., if you have not read any messages in this session they will be grayed out]
I'm guessing you don't mean this but I need to check.

or
Do you mean "Previous" and "Next"
Which takes you to the Next and Previous "UNREAD" message.
[i.e., if you have no Unread messages there is nothing for them to do]

>>You are using ThunderBird Portable from this site right?

Yes

I did upgrade from a previous version (not sure what the number was) but the problem has been present ever since the first install which was a download from this site.

>>Did you allow it to auto/selfupdate or did you download it from this site and upgrade over the previous version?

It did an auto-update but then I re-downloaded from this site and installed over the previous version. The version numbers were the same.

These have never worked since I installed Thunderbird. They flash as colored icons, then gray out.

>>or
>>Do you mean "Previous" and "Next"

I did re-add these to customize the toolbar and now they are working.

"Previous" and "Next"

"Previous" and "Next"
"I did re-add these to customize the toolbar and now they are working"

So I'm taking this to mean that your problem is now solved Smile
Right?

"Previous" and "Next"

Previous and Next are working

Back and Forward are not. These should work even with a folder of messages that have already been read, correct?

Test

Let's test it.

When you first open TB they should both be gray.

Pick a message to read.
Pick a different message (not the next one)
Pick still another message to read.

The "Back" icon should turn blue.
When you click on it it should take you to the last(previous) message you were looking at. At this point the "Forward" icon should turn blue.

Does this happen?
The buttons don't do what I would intuitively think they would.
They don't take you "back" and "forward" in your message list.
They take you "back" and "forward" in you current viewing "history".

Test

Both the "Forward" and "Back" icons stay flash blue for a moment, then turn gray.

My goal in this was to be able to page through already read messages in a folder without having to close each message before opening the next one. Isn't that what those buttons are for?

No

"Isn't that what those buttons are for?"

No.
See my reply above.

I suggest preview pane and down arrow key.

so why doesn't ...

move the previous/next unread message do the deed for you?

Are you trying this all within one account or one newsgroup?

Oh, one other thing if doing this w/ newsgroups, I noticed that when I tried to go back through already read messages in the history (which is why there are little triangle arrows on the "Go Forward/Backward One Message") if I set the newsgroup to only show unread messages, it wouldn't let me cycle through the read messages. They would show up on the drop down, but when I clicked on one of them, it would take me to the next unread message, since I wasn't allowing the program to show read messages. I don't know if this is something similar to your problem.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

so why doesn't

Ok, it seems resolved. User problem, not software problem.
Many thanks for your patience and assistance.
