Removing the word "portable" from an application's menu item

My version of the PortableApps menu has a load of "portable" applications, for example I have "Abiword Portable", "Clamwin Portable", "Firefox Portable", "GAIM Portable", "GNUcash Portable", "Inkscape Portable", "KompoZer Portable", "On-screen Keyboard Portable", "OpenOffice.org Calc Portable", "OpenOffice.org Writer Portable", "Scibus Portable", "Sudoko Portable", "Sunbird Portable", "Thunderbird Portable". That's an awful lot of "Portable"s. I'd like to remove that word.

I tried editing the Name= clause of the App\AppInfo/Appinfo.ini and deleting the word "Portable" but it still appears in the menu item list.

How can I customise my menu so this superfluous occurence of "Portable" doesn't show up any more?

For now,

the only way to do that is to recompile the launcher. When the new version of the Platform finally gets released,I think editing the App\AppInfo/Appinfo.ini will be sufficient.

John has asked several times

John has asked several times that we all stop promoting the modded menus because the developers of the mods have all come on-board to help develop the official menu

I Agree

I see no shame in promoting the menus when it betters the user. Until we do get a new release, I think it's much better the original poster gets something that suits what he's looking for as long as he know it's unofficial and unsupported.

When?

Yeah I know that's a loaded question and that people have been asking when the next release wil become available. For the moment I can live with the multiple duplication of "portable". And my need for the system will soon finish for this academic year. But when the new year starts (September) I'd love not to see that word all over the place.

"New version" goes the wrong way :-(

Having downloaded and installed v1.1 it seems the "problem" has gotten worse. It looks to me as if the PortableApps menu is pulling out and using the Internal Name from the executables Version property.

Nope, Same

Same code as before. Check ProductName first. If no, check FileDescription. If no, use the file name without "exe".

Something changed with v1.1

Looks like something changed with the Firefox stuff. I don't remember the menu having all that "Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition" in version 1.0.

Is the code going to change so that the menu item is taken from the appinfo.ini file? (I can't hack the ProductName/FileDescription stuff as my prefered latform is Mac OS X with PortableApps for my client visits and they don't have any development tools for me to hack exe files.)

Same

Firefox Portable itself was renamed to Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition quite some time ago as part of our licensing agreement with Mozilla. You must have been using a very old launcher.

The next release will use the names from appinfo.ini and will allow you to rename in the menu itself by right-clicking and selecting rename.

Would you consider to think about also adding the apps config.ini (currently found in Other/Source) to the AppInfo ini?

Nope

appinfo.ini is not supposed to be edited by the end user nor is it edited by the Menu in the coming release (renaming and re-categorization data is stored with the platform, not with the app, as it should be). It's a file to tell the platform what the app is and how it can be used.

Two observations

I'm sure it was the final version of v1.0 that I ran. (Only been a PortableApps users for a few months.)

Your mention of "the next release" begs the question: when? Wink

Too cryptic

Your comment is too cryptic to follow. What is "P Start"?
