Getting Started on a Website.

Looking at dbdii's site, I suddenly had a craving to make a site with Drupal. I can't seem to find one with apache/mysql and doesn't require you to post forum topics. (frihost.com :(). But even with XAMPP I can't seem to make a database...
P.S. I'm so happy that we don't have to click preview in the topics ;).

I also would like to start a Drupal Website

I would like to do that too (but only in Summer, when there's no exams).

On my topic about "Creating dynamic sites" b23 advised x10Hosting, that seems to have Apache 2.2+ and MySQL 4.x.

So, I hope to have helped (trough b23s help Blum )

PS: Happy I don't have to manually type ?page=something when a topic has more that one page. And sad that smileys don't work Sad

From x10Hosting's Terms of

From x10Hosting's Terms of Service:
To prevent an account from being suspended for inactivity it is required users visit the x10Hosting forums located at http://forums.x10hosting.com at least ONCE every TWO WEEKS.

I presume that you want free hosting. I tried FreeHostia and AwardSpace, but couldn't get Drupal to run properly at all (the closest I got was where any pages with forms would just time out - making it useless). Server misconfiguration issues. I eventually went and got it going myself. I'm now using WebHostingBuzz for my hosting. (yes, that's an affiliates link! Smile )
I have a reseller account (http://chrismorgan.info), and if either or you are interested, I could sort something out with you for a dollar or two per month, but I'm not sure how I'd accept payment; I can't use PayPal yet. In Australia, you could just do bank transfer.

I like Awardspace

it has all the stuff I need but the ftp sucks (60 sec timeout).
I settled with comphost.info, planning to get a co.nr redirectory.

Drupal?

I never managed to get Drupal working with AwardSpace, and yeah, the 60 second timeout was rather annoying. As well as only one FTP thread.

If you have any luck with comphost.info and Drupal, post back - I reckon there are others would like to know, too.

The name.co.nr thing looks good - except for the forced AD (I'll call it an ad - it is an ad, whether they say it is or not!)

Okay, I settled.

I changed it to my homepage. The only drawback is that it doesn't allow Drupal to access other sites. Other than that it's good.
As for the co.nr thing, just put it in the footer in a block like the drupal block.
I still haven't read the cookbook.

How is your hosting?

Ok, I am planning to make a Drupal site too, so, as you already have that hosting for a few time, how is it? Is it good? How easy/hard was to install Drupal?

I hope I am not annoying with so many questions.

Don't worry.

It's decent, up to what I expected. Drupal Installation was easy, just make a database, fill out the form and go. The only thing is that it doesn't allow Drupal to access other sites, so OpenID and RSS feeds aren't allowed.

Neat....

How would the whole account things work? I might do a basic drupal site, for personal use, like keep in touch with friends.

Me too

I too intend to make a site with Drupal. And thanks digitxp, I will probably create an account when I have time.

EDIT: Created a site, still very young, but growing. Now I am trying to understand how to add multi-language capabilities (automatic browser language detection).

Really, really, thank you digitxp. You helped me evolve to the next level (my own site... wow).

Is this normal?

digitxp, and anybody that uses comphost.info, is the cpu time daily or monthly? It is that I have a quarter of my CPU time consumed and I didn't do anything in drupal (and neither other people as it seems).

So, can anybody tell me more?

I believe it is...

I believe it is monthly, yesterday I used 32MB of bandwidth, really I didnt do anything, I think i am going to turn off some things, like logging and such. With comphost you get 10GB every month, I dont think I will ever use all that bandwidth up unless I get like 1000 users, cause I have 3 users and used up 32MB so maybe if users dont refresh your pages a lot then you should be good for a while.

I have already enabled everything I can

I have enabled page caching already and "trotling" (or something) so it doesn't use too much cpu yesterday, when my consumed cpu time was almost none. Today I saw a quarter of CPU time eaten (something like 3000seconds) and I got horrified cause I think only me and sergentsiler use that site mostly.

EDIT: Found out that after all the CPU usage is daily. So I am relieved now.

Have You tried?

Have you tried www.byethost.com ? They offer free hosting with SQL and apache. I even think they have a script installer that will set it up for you.

Try this one. I have been using it for a while. http://www.gameguyshosting.com. It doesn't seem to require people to post or anything to stay active. And it provides a lot of different services. If you need help with it just contact me at my email which is portableapps.com(at)gmail(dot)com (awsome emailright?)

Need help....

Ok I got the whole drupal installation thing going, I made a database called Drupal, but I cannot get it to work. I see this error message all the time

Failed to connect to your MySQL database server. MySQL reports the following message: Access denied for user 'comp_1923829'@'localhost' (using password: YES).
Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct database hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?
For more help, see the Installation and upgrading handbook. If you are unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your hosting provider.

I dont know what to do after this, can anyone help me with this problem. Thanks in advance.

I had the same prob.

It's quite simple. It's because there's a roll-up menu, open it, and check your credentials.
For comphost.info, it's something like sql(#).comphost.info.

Yeah I still cant get it.....

Could you put some general explaination for comphost.info like....
Go to the database catagory, click on MySQL databases link, then create a database..... Just wondering do you just create a database by doing that and if so were there other steps??

Goto Control

Goto Control Panel>>Databases>>MySQL Databases , there's a part where you add a database name, pukt in whatever you want, it'll come out as (Your Username)_(The Database name you put in). Then the Credentials for the database is:

Username: (Your cpanel username)
Password: (Your cpanel pass)
Server: (It's under account information, on the left, MySQL host name)
Database Name: (Whatever it came out)

And also....

...with the system they use (cpanel) you need to pair the db username and database. I don't know why they did that but they did. If you go through the Mysql db creation wizard it will either ask you if you want to pair it or do it automatically. Can't remember b/c I haven't used it in a while b/c I haven't created a site in a few weeks.

How do you allow the user to initially choose there own password instead of one being sent to the email when using drupal.

hey I got it....

Go to administer then Go to USER MANAGMENT, then find User Settings, click on that and uncheck the "Require e-mail verification when a visitor creates an account" Then they can choose their own password instead of being sent one. I was gonna create an account on yours but I noticed that was how your settings were. As soon as that is changed I will gladly register for your site. Smile Oh yeah nice site by the way, looks way better than mine.

Cool/....

I just found a site that offers 15GB bandwidth, is ad free, and you get 500MB of space. I might switch to that one. here it is http://www.fatehost.net/
Edit: Check this out, http://www.110mb.com/ that is crazy, 300 GB of bandwidth. I wonder how long this site is going to last.
http://www.000webhost.com/ this one looks interesting offers 100GB of bandwidth
Here, Im gonna post what I found so far that looks good.

just me talking...

a good host is one i have damned before, orgfree. located Here. althogh it only offers 200 Mb storage, there is a 2 Gb per day bandwith restriction and a 10 Tb (Yes Terabyte with a T) monthly bandwith limit. thogh i would not recomend this host if you are going for strait html and stuff. but since my recent upgrade to drupal (see here note my homepage link here on papps will take you to a temp site), things have been going much smoother. they have FULL ftp acsess with mysql 5 and phpmyadmin integrated into the host site so there is no going to external sites for management like comphost does. this site is also part of a giant network of free hosts at Free Web Hosting Area. all are completely free so no worries!

Easy

Easy:

<table>
    <tbody>
        <tr>
            <th>Table head content here</th>
            <th>Table head content here</th>
        </tr>
        <tr>
            <td>Table content here</td>
            <td>Table content here</td>
        </tr>
    </tbody>
</table>

This is it. The <tr> tags are for rows, the <th> tags are for header cells, and the <td> tags are for table cells.

For styling like the ones on PApps.com you must use CSS.

Question for those of you....

I was wondering, this question is for those of you who use comphost or have at least an active website with more than 5 members, how much bandwidth have you used and how long has your site been up for, I have used 80MB bandwidth and my website has been up for 7days and 13hours.
