It's always important to make backups of your files, we all know that. But I was wondering about this: sometimes when things don't go as planned there could be a slight change of losing some files when using an application. While often these ar just a few settings sometime this potentially could be more important.
I suggest that (optionally) on appstart some apps would make a quick backup of some important files in case something would go not as planned. This could be done by the portable launcher and could be put in a PortableBackup folder on the drive. This feature could be turned on/off using an ini file and while this could take longger than without backing-up depending on the app and files, it might be an extra feature for the platform and portable apps. It's not ment for backing up the application itself but aimed at things like email, documents, etc.
To keep things realistic and usable this would mean that the app keeps a number of backups (user defined?) depending on date-time and will remove them (optionally) after a user defined period. To speed things up backup could work without or with compressing depending on the size/speed tradeoff.
Of course this is not meant as a replacement of a regular backup on a different media but it would or at least could be a safety net if things go wrong.
Would this be interesting to have as optional feature for a official portable apps launcher? Would this be possible to implement and supported by PortableApps?
Please let me know what you think.
First of all, if it's standalone, then there's no Backup Folder and that would be a messy situation if it's activated by default.
Second, that'll take a lot of space (okay not really) but if something bad would happen the copying would make it worse.
I seriously don't want to add new features to the launchers because a rewrite for all the apps would be required.
If this'll be a feature, it should be included in the menu.

I really dont see the problem with his idea. backup some bookmarks if firefox exists, some database files, and some more really wouldn't take up alot.
Na na na, come on!
it's a function that can or should be put in the PAM backup function, to set up automatic scheduling of backups of say, the Data folders.
But it should be an option to run, as I know that if I enabled it, at many times it'd probably take longer to do the quick backup than it was for me to use my app, in and out.
