Forum Suggestion: Larger Avatars

Hey,

Anyone else think a 20x20 or 50x50 avatar would a neat idea for the forums and comments? Just curious. Perhaps 20x20 would be a little more tolerated being a bigger size then the current 16x16 image allowance, but not big enough to take away from the professionalism of the forums.

Just a thought. Smile

Hmm

50 x 50, oh gosh no! Blum However, you're right in saying that 20 x 20 may help with image clarity, but still keep the organization and professionalism.

Edit: On second thought, I'm looking at the 16's, and they fit in beside the username so well, I don't know if 20 x 20 with have the same integration.

How about setting it up so

How about setting it up so that the picture is 16 x 16 by the user name in the forums and such, but have a larger version on the user account page?

Yeah, I'm the quiet one....

Yeah

I like that idea. The only problem I see is what the large version would look like resized online to 16 x 16.

they could be larger and

they could be larger and scaled down for the places they are 16 x 16
that just means everyone has to upload a new photo

as long at the forums are ...

still 16 * 16 or smaller. I don't like that there would be more fluff than content if the avatars get too big.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Drupal

Drupal does not support that by default. But maybe there is a module that does support that...

Also, I think 24x24 is bigger enough for anybody (plus it is the next smallest standard size).

Working On It

I've been researching this since I saw it on Digg and other sites. It's the best option but not supported by Drupal by default. I'd found a way to cobble it together in Drupal 5 but wanted to hold off until the Drupal 6 upgrade.

John's main concern is the

John's main concern is the bandwidth he said when he introduced the avatars. But many poeple suggested that he could just make them host it on their own image hoster (imageshack photobucket etc.)

Bandwidth Issue

My bandwidth concern had to do with making an individual page in the forums too big. If there were multiple big forum avatars to download, the page would increase in size quite a bit (in addition to looking bad). Having individual large avatars show up on profile pages doesn't have that issue since they'll only be loaded when someone chooses to view an individual profile.

I think these icon avatars

I think these icon avatars are kinda giving the page a uniform look. Having bigger avatars would not make any other impact than increased bandwidth.

Only rarely I see avatars that are funny or impressive. I would stick to what you have now if I had any say..

Profile Page Only

The large avatars appear on the PROFILE page only. The forum pages will be unchanged.

Thanks!

Thank you for the welcome John, and thanks to everyone for the feedback!

I just came back to this thread (I have been busy) and was blown away by the response. I never expected to get so much feedback for this. I never really expected to get any. I will be looking forward to seeing if anything changes. Regardless, I still like the forums, the community, and the apps!

Thanks again!

New Idea

If you make a post can your picture be larger and then all of the subsequent comments (including the poster's comment) sport the 16 x 16 icons?

self.path = path if self.path == None else self.path

Well...

So people would get a better look at the larger picture mainly because I don't think profiles are looked at that much. It would give the larger avatars more exposure, and it would just look cool. Smile

self.path = path if self.path == None else self.path
