How does one detect a fake memory stick or flash drive. i know some of the obvious signs. The deal being too good (IE 16GB thumb drive for 10 dollars), Floppy drive slow write read times, Random corrupt files and the obvious look (Hmm Lexar is misspelled a Iexor... hmm :| )
I found a program out there that allows one to reformat a thumb drive to what ever size you want... but it isnt open source and is windows only and i run linux.

that proggy seems like a longshot, i doubt it can really format your drive to ANY size, more like any size up to capacity. if it allowed you to format an old 256Mb to 1 Gb, that would be more than physically possable so i dont think it would work. bottom line is that you should not use that program.

that if you have a 256Mb flash drive, you can change the information inside to where once you plug it into a computer, it thinks it's a 1Gb (but obviously only 256Mb can be used). I've seen a corrupted flash drive do that, so I'm sure it can be done.

that is what i was trying to say. anyway the point still stands, don't use that proggy.

That program allows one ro reformat the drive back to its original size.
what is the point of this discussion then?? it seems that the thread title has nothing of worth to do with your comment and the part that we could answer, you already knew, which again begs the question of , What is the point of this discussion??
Zoop
He asked how to DETECT fake memory. the tool is only useful if you already know the memory is fake.
please, lighten up a little bit, your comments have seemed rather harsh lately.
